KPop Demon Hunters gets “ridiculous” school ban over “deeply uncomfortable” demon references

Lilliput Church of England Infant School in Poole, Dorset, has prohibited students from singing songs from the popular Netflix series KPop Demon Hunters.

BBC News reports that parents received an email from the school last Friday, November 14th, stating that some community members were very upset by the film’s depiction of demons, which they believe represent evil forces against God and morality.

The school explained that the songs didn’t align with its Christian values and requested parents ask their children to refrain from singing them at school to be considerate of students and families whose beliefs differ.

Following the ban, parents have been voicing their disapproval. One parent told BBC News, “I thought it was absurd. My daughter and all her friends are really into K-pop and love it.”

He added that it was a simple, positive activity that helped the children build confidence, and some of them had already practiced the songs in their after-school groups.

Acting headteacher Lloyd Allington explained the school’s position, stating that while parents have the right to decide what their children experience at home, the school also needs to consider the wide range of beliefs held by students and families.

Some Christians might feel uneasy with depictions of demons, as they see these figures as opposing God and everything good. We’re not suggesting parents discourage their children from enjoying this film or its music if it fits with their personal values and faith.

We’ll help children learn that not everyone believes the same things, and how to be respectful and supportive of others’ beliefs.
