I’m so hyped for the new Doctor Who spin-off, The War Between the Land and the Sea! Russell T Davies has hinted it’s going to tackle some really relevant, current issues, and it sounds like it’ll be just as impactful as his previous show, Years and Years. If you liked that, you’re definitely in for a treat!
The new series revisits the Sea Devils – also known as Homo Aqua – classic enemies from the show Who, as they return and conflict with humans due to ocean pollution.
In an interview with Empire, Davies explained his goal was to make a captivating drama that also demonstrates the Doctor Who universe can still tell impactful and relevant stories.
What to Read Next
The showrunner explained they wanted to demonstrate the full power and potential of the show to the BBC.
He explained that the show feels incredibly current and relevant. “We’re even tackling the frustrating issue of water companies prioritizing profits over people – and that’s essential for a story centered around water!”

Russell Tovey, who plays Barclay on the show, explained that he prefers working on projects with a meaningful message. While he acknowledges the importance of entertainment, he believes art should also have substance, something he feels showrunner Russell Davies consistently achieves.
I remember Davies mentioning he’d been wanting to explore these ideas for ages, and honestly, the connection to Who was what finally made it click for him. It really helped him figure out how to bring his vision to life!
As a huge fan, I’ve been wondering how any writer tackles the climate crisis these days. It feels like we’re already living through a climate war, and honestly, this just really brings that home.

I came up with this idea before I even started talking to the team about returning to Doctor Who in 2021, and it was the very first thing I suggested.
It surprisingly relies on the world of Doctor Who. If I tried to present this idea without that connection – just saying there’s a race of creatures living in the sea – people would be skeptical. Because the Sea Devils already exist within the show’s universe, it instantly solves a lot of potential issues with the concept.
The new Doctor Who series, The War Between the Land and the Sea, will begin with two episodes shown back-to-back, followed by one episode each week in the UK. Russell Davies will also be writing the Christmas special next year, and Billie Piper will be returning as the Doctor.

I’m so excited! The new series, The War Between the Land and the Sea, is starting this Sunday, December 7th on BBC One and you’ll also be able to watch it on iPlayer. Even better, it’s coming to Disney+ internationally soon after, so everyone will be able to see it!
