Here’s who plays Dorothy in Wicked: For Good – and it’s not Alisha Weir

The highly anticipated movie Wicked: For Good arrives in theaters this Friday, and fans have been wondering who will play Dorothy. The filmmakers kept the actress a secret, leading to rumors that Alisha Weir – known for her roles in Matilda the Musical and Abigail – landed the part of the famous character from The Wizard of Oz.

Those familiar with the musical will notice Dorothy isn’t actually visible on stage. Characters interact with someone speaking from offstage, and even at the most important moment, we only see her as a shadow. The movie Wicked: For Good handles Dorothy similarly – we never see her face, and there’s a reason for that, which we’ll discuss shortly.

With critics having seen and reviewed Wicked: For Good, it’s now confirmed that Bethany Weaver plays Dorothy in the film – this is her first major movie role, though she actually appeared briefly as Dorothy in the opening of the original Wicked movie.

Who is Bethany Weaver?

I’m really excited about Weaver – they’re a super talented British dancer, choreographer, and actor! I actually saw their choreography in Asmahan – Life and Music at the Peacock Theatre in London a few months ago, and it was amazing. Plus, I know they’ve also been in some great shows as a performer, like Broken Wings and Oklahoma! The Musical. I’m definitely keeping an eye on what they do next!

Although her involvement in the Wicked films was listed on her acting profile, her part as Dorothy was only revealed when the movie began showing in theaters. You’ll have to check the end credits to find her, though, as she doesn’t appear on screen.

Why don’t we see Dorothy’s face in Wicked: For Good?

Before the movie Wicked: For Good came out, director Jon M Chu explained why the film, like the stage musical, doesn’t show Dorothy much. He clarified the reasoning behind keeping her mostly out of view.

He explained to People that he didn’t want to interfere with anyone’s existing ideas about who Dorothy is or how she fits into the story. He emphasized that the new movie remains focused on Elphaba and Glinda’s story, and Dorothy is simply caught up in their conflict.

Cynthia Erivo praised the decision, explaining in an interview, “I think it’s great because it allows everyone to have the version of Dorothy they love.”

Wicked: For Good is released in cinemas on 21 November.
