I swear, it feels like Seth Rogen was everywhere on TV this year, and always making me laugh! I especially loved his show, The Studio – it’s such a clever and funny look at Hollywood. But what’s really impressed me over the years is how versatile he is. He can be hilarious, but he’s also proven he can handle really dramatic roles, like in The Fablemans or when he played Steve Jobs. It makes me wonder why he hasn’t made a bigger push into those kinds of serious projects with big-name directors, like Adam Sandler did?
For GQ’s “Men of the Year” issue, the creator of Superbad discussed his work in Hollywood. He explained why his filmography isn’t as extensive as Adam Sandler’s or as diverse as Emma Stone’s best roles. He revealed the reason is surprisingly straightforward: he accepts projects as they come, prioritizing them over other commitments.
I only appear in movies when I’m actually offered a role, which isn’t very often – maybe once every five or six years. It’s not like I’m constantly declining big projects to do comedies; I’m not turning down opportunities to work with directors like David Fincher to make something like ‘Blockers’.
Seth Rogen’s explanation of how he chooses projects is actually quite humorous – imagining him working on a movie like Blockers compared to one by David Fincher is a funny contrast, even though Blockers is a great comedy. But seriously, it’s been fascinating to watch Rogen grow and change over the years, leaving behind older roles. It seems like he’s undergoing a significant shift in his career, and The Studio might be what’s driving this new direction.
Luckily, Seth Rogen’s comedic talent doesn’t seem to be going anywhere. He’s naturally funny, as evidenced by his good-natured reaction to the Emmys misspelling his name. Plus, he’s starring in the 2025 film Good Fortune with Aziz Ansari, which blends humor and drama – though it’s primarily a comedy and has received surprisingly positive reviews.

32 Comedians Who Were Great In A Dramatic Role
It’ll be fascinating to see what roles Seth Rogen takes on now that people understand his desire to expand his acting range. Hopefully, some directors will consider him for different types of projects. I’d really like to see him try a serious, dramatic role alongside his usual comedies. Adam Sandler and others have already proven that comedians can successfully take on dramatic work and show off their full potential, and it would be great to see Rogen do the same.
You can watch both of Seth Rogen’s comedy series, The Studio and Platonic, by subscribing to Apple TV+.
