The new crime series Cooper and Fry, starring Mandip Gill (known from Doctor Who) and Robert James-Collier (Downton Abbey), premieres tonight. Based on the novels by Stephen Booth, the show follows two very different detectives as they solve crimes in the Peak District.
In a town steeped in local legends and shadowed by unsolved killings, police officer Ben Cooper teams up with new arrival Diane Fry to investigate a string of strange occurrences.
Set in the Peak District, this series follows detectives Ben Cooper and Diane Fry, who despite their different approaches, team up to solve a string of puzzling cases.
What to Read Next
Okay, so Fry thinks all the local legends are just silly stories, but trust me, things are about to get weird. We’re not just solving cases here – we’re dealing with some seriously creepy beliefs that people around these hills still actually believe in, and it’s going to make navigating everything way more complicated.
The new series, directed by Ryan Tohill who also directed The Dig, starts tonight at 8pm on Channel 5. Fans of shows like Downton Abbey and Doctor Who will be happy to see some familiar faces in the cast.

The Radio Times compared the central detective’s partnership to the dynamic between Mulder and Scully in The X-Files.
What really distinguishes them is their differing perspectives on local traditions. Cooper embraces the folklore deeply rooted in the Edendale community, while Fry tends to view superstitions with skepticism.
Their collaboration feels reminiscent of The X-Files, but instead of a grand conspiracy, these clashing viewpoints unfold in the unsettling setting of a remote rural area.

The upcoming crime series, first revealed in July, will have four long episodes, each lasting two hours.
Mandip Gill is widely recognized for her role as Yaz Khan, the popular companion to Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor in Doctor Who. She played the character from 2018 until 2022.
James-Collier is well-known for playing Liam Connor on Coronation Street and Thomas Barrow on Downton Abbey.
Cooper and Fry airs at 8pm on 5.
