First trailer for Moana’s live-action remake leaves fans asking the same question

Disney has unveiled the first trailer for its upcoming live-action remake of Moana. Catherine Lagaʻaia will star as Moana, and Dwayne Johnson is returning as Maui, the demigod from the original animated film. Announced in 2023, the remake—also titled Moana—is scheduled to be released on July 10, 2026. The trailer offers fans a first glimpse of the story and the world of Motunui, mirroring the beloved plot of the original animated movie.

The new trailer also showcases Auliʻi Cravalho as Moana and Dwayne Johnson as Maui, the demigod who can transform into different creatures. We see Maui briefly as an eagle, but only from behind.

Honestly, I couldn’t believe it when I saw they were making another Moana movie! The original came out in 2016 – it’s not like it’s ancient history! I just don’t get why Disney feels the need to remake something that was so great just nine years ago.

Someone else wondered why they were recreating a CGI movie that was only a few years old, especially when the remake would also rely heavily on CGI.

Fans reacted negatively to the remake announcement, with one commenting that Disney seems to be running out of original ideas by revisiting a film that’s less than ten years old. Another pointed out the original movie hadn’t even reached its tenth anniversary when the remake was announced.

One viewer commented that this remake feels unnecessary, suggesting it’s simply a cash grab because it closely copies the original. Another person pointed out that the animated Moana movie is still too recent to warrant a live-action adaptation.

Someone else commented that they don’t understand why people would pay to see this movie, since it’s basically a copy of a film from a decade ago and you could just watch the original at home.

The movie’s trailer reveals it will include songs from Lin-Manuel Miranda’s original soundtrack, such as ‘I Am Moana,’ which actor Cliff Curtis (Lagaʻaia) performs in the teaser.

The Disney movie Moana, which came out in 2016, tells the story of the adventurous title character (voiced by Auli’I Cravalho). Moana sets out to save the goddess Te Fiti by returning the heart that was stolen by the demigod Maui.

Okay, so good news for anyone who loves Moana! You can already watch the original on Disney+. But even better, they’re making a live-action version, and it’s coming out on July 10th, 2026! I’ve already marked my calendar, honestly.

The latest issue of Living Legends is now available! You can find Ariana & Witches at newsstands and online for only £8.99.
