Critical Role is continuing its winning streak of turning Dungeons & Dragons campaigns into popular stories with its new animated series, The Mighty Nein. The increasing popularity of D&D is largely due to talented storytellers like the cast of Critical Role on YouTube. Following the success of their first animated series, The Legend of Vox Machina, Prime Video is teaming up with them again to bring the more intricate and sprawling story of The Mighty Nein to life.
Fans of Vox Machina will find The Mighty Nein instantly recognizable, with a similar look, feel, and many returning voice actors. However, this new series is a larger, more complex story, taking place across different worlds and following a ragtag group of travelers with their own individual motivations – a group that frequently unites and then falls into conflict. Despite its complexity, the series is exceptionally well-made and ultimately surpasses what came before.
The Mighty Nein Builds A Rich World Full Of Colorful Characters

I was immediately struck by how different The Mighty Nein felt from The Legend of Vox Machina. It doesn’t rush into things; instead, it beautifully builds the world around you and gradually introduces you to each character. Knowing it’s based on a D&D campaign that so many of us love, I really appreciated that the show wasn’t afraid to take risks and forge its own path. It means the beginning is a bit of a slow burn, but trust me, it’s absolutely worth the investment – whether you’re already a Critical Role fan or completely new to the story!
The first season’s eight episodes make you quickly care about the characters and genuinely cheer for their wins. It’s a show that skillfully mixes funny moments with surprising emotional depth, featuring well-developed and fascinating characters. Plus, the addition of several talented new actors really elevates the series and sets a high standard for shows like it.
This fantasy series is truly impressive, boasting a captivating group of original characters and a remarkably polished feel for a new show. What sets it apart is its history – it started as a multi-year storytelling campaign, allowing the characters to be thoroughly developed and refined over time. The Mighty Nein expertly builds on this foundation, enriching key details and highlighting the most thrilling moments to create a genuinely brilliant experience.
The Mighty Nein Is The Best D&D Adaptation To Date

If you’re new to Dungeons & Dragons stories, The Legend of Vox Machina is a great place to start – it’s easy to follow and captures the feel of a D&D game. But The Mighty Nein really expands on that foundation, building out a much richer world with detailed magic, cultures, and civilizations that all connect seamlessly. It’s more intricate, but it also feels like a truly immersive fantasy experience.
The writing and character development are both excellent and feel fully realized. While this is only the first season – and a second season is already planned – the story has a strong foundation and lots of potential. From the start, the heroes’ journey is incredibly engaging, and the cast delivers outstanding performances, truly bringing the characters and story to life.
The Mighty Nein is a fantastic adventure series and easily ranks among the best fantasy TV shows available. Although the show spends time developing characters and plot points—sometimes at a slower pace—these segments are thoughtfully crafted and ultimately contribute to a satisfying and rewarding experience as the story and characters evolve. I highly recommend The Mighty Nein.
Starting November 19th, you can watch the first three episodes of The Mighty Nein on Prime Video. New episodes from season 1 will then be released every Wednesday.
