Talamasca: The Secret Order Episode 5 Review – Rushed Conflict & Lots Of Downtime Is The Calm Before The Storm

Be warned, this contains spoilers for episode 5 of Talamasca: The Secret Order! While I’ve enjoyed the series since it began, episode 5 was uneven. It started strongly, with Jasper pressing Guy for information about Doris and her importance to him. But the situation quickly escalated, and Jasper abruptly lost all trust in Guy.

Guy narrowly escapes becoming a vampire, rescued by Doris in a dramatic scene where Jasper almost burns to death. This thrilling sequence kicks off the rest of the episode. Now, Guy and Doris must abandon their mission and flee London, and their only hope for escape rests with Helen – if she’s willing to assist them.

Despite a strong start, the story in Talamasca: The Secret Order feels rushed in episode 5. The falling out between Jasper and Guy, for example, seems forced, as if it only happened to create conflict and move the plot forward. This pattern continues throughout the episode, making events feel contrived.

Talamasca Episode 5 Lays Groundwork, But Does Very Little Else

As the episode progressed, I was disappointed by the falling out between Guy and Jasper. Although it was expected that the characters in Talamasca: The Secret Order would eventually become rivals, their sudden change in relationship felt rushed and left a lot of potential unexplored. I would have preferred to see them continue working together, or even address their underlying trust issues, rather than immediately becoming enemies. It felt like the story cut short a promising path, especially considering their shared dissatisfaction with the existing Immortal power structure.

Despite the rapid pace of events, key developments helped shape the season one finale. A significant emotional moment occurred when Guy convinced Helen to help him and Doris escape London. Seeing Helen reveal her vulnerabilities regarding her sister was a welcome display of her humanity, and it also created doubt about her loyalty to the Talamasca, complicating her role within the agency.

What really stood out to me was the instant connection between Guy and Doris. Even though they haven’t had much time together on screen, their chemistry felt real. Guy opening up about his mother and explaining his reasons for joining the Talamasca clearly touched Doris and created a genuine bond between them.

This episode doesn’t really develop its interesting ideas, or the groundwork it lays for future events. We don’t see much progress with the police trying to decode the encryption, or with Ridge’s investigation into Guy and Helen’s relationship. Plus, a strange conversation Olive has hints that Helen is involved in something unexpected, possibly something she’s even keeping from viewers.

This episode mainly focuses on unresolved plot points rather than advancing the overall story. While the fourth episode set up a potentially complex narrative, this one feels surprisingly straightforward. Focusing on Jasper as the main villain does help, but it also diminishes some of the intriguing nuances that made this series stand out within the broader Immortal Universe.

Talamasca Episode 5’s Cliffhanger Promises A Much More Satisfying Finale

The final moments of Talamasca: The Secret Order episode 5 provide crucial new information and some surprising twists that will significantly affect the finale. Most notably, it’s revealed that Olive seems to have Jasper’s trust, even while investigating Helen. The episode strongly suggests she misled him about Guy and Doris being aboard a boat with Doris’s coven, which was then attacked and killed by Revenants.

Whether she truly knew their location is uncertain, but her behavior suggests either the Talamasca’s coldheartedness or her own disloyalty. The biggest surprise, however, is the final reveal: Doris possesses the 752. This makes her and Guy prime targets, and could also endanger them if the organization finds out they have it.

Honestly, I’m still trying to figure out where all this leaves Helen. She’s desperately hoping the data from the 752 will lead her to her sister, but Doris doesn’t exactly trust the agency, so getting that information won’t be easy. And if Doris learns the full, horrific truth about what happened to her family… well, it feels like Guy might be the only person she’ll be able to rely on. It’s a really compelling setup, and I’m eager to see how that dynamic plays out.

Episode 5 of Talamasca: The Secret Order had some pacing issues – it felt both hurried and dragged out in places. However, it laid the groundwork for a thrilling season finale. While this episode wasn’t as strong as previous ones, the ending suggests the show will finish with a powerful and unforgettable climax.
