That was fast: Man who accosted Ariana Grande last week is serving time already in Singapore

Singapore’s legal system acted swiftly after an Australian man rushed the stage during Ariana Grande‘s appearance at the Asian premiere of “Wicked: For Good.” He had bypassed security to disrupt the event.

This week, he’s already serving his sentence for the offense.

Johnson Wen, 26, was found guilty of disturbing the peace on Monday and will spend nine days in jail, according to the BBC. Video footage from Thursday shows Wen bypassing security at Universal Studios Singapore and rushing towards Ariana Grande. He then wrapped his arms around her and jumped up and down, seemingly posing for cameras. Grande’s co-star, Cynthia Erivo, intervened to pull him away, and security then removed him from the area.

Awards

The Governors Awards, where the Academy gives out special honorary Oscars, drew a crowd including Sydney Sweeney, Ethan Hawke, Cynthia Erivo, and Ryan Coogler.

According to the BBC, Wen attempted to jump over the barriers along the event’s red carpet twice. Security stopped him the second time and he was arrested on Friday.

The Australian man was visiting Singapore as a tourist with a 90-day visa and has been held in custody since his arrest. He received his sentence on Monday, following a request from prosecutors for a one-week jail term. The offense he committed carries a maximum sentence of three months, according to the Straits Times newspaper.

One person commented on Wen’s Instagram post, upset that he rushed onto the carpet and grabbed Grande. They wrote, “This is not okay! You really scared her, and you physically touched her. I hope you face consequences and are no longer allowed at events.”

The judge in Singapore apparently thought something similar when speaking with Wen at the trial.

The man who rushed the stage and touched Ariana Grande at the Singapore premiere of “Wicked” has been charged with disturbing the peace.

I’ve been following this case, and it’s just unbelievable. This guy, Wen, has repeatedly rushed the stage at events and even ran onto the field during sports games – he even did it at the Olympics in Paris! Apparently, when the judge asked if he had anything to say for himself, he simply promised he wouldn’t do it again. It’s a pretty simple apology for causing so much disruption, honestly.

The judge questioned Wen, asking if he was being insincere or truly meant what he said. Wen confirmed that he would stop his actions.

According to the Straits Times, the judge pointed out that Wen had disrupted proceedings before without facing any penalties.

The judge told Mr. Wen that he was mistaken if he believed this situation would unfold like others, and reminded him that every action has consequences.

Awards

The Screen Actors Guild is changing the name of its annual awards to the Actor Awards. This comes after the organization moved the awards ceremony to Netflix, and the change was announced on Friday.

The judge stated that Wen appeared to be acting for personal attention, prioritizing their own needs over the safety of others. The judge also determined the actions were planned in advance and increased the proposed sentence by two days. It is not known if Wen was also required to pay a fine.

Prosecutors had labeled him a “serial intruder” who was aiming for clout online, the BBC reported.

Wen, known online as “Pyjama Man,” shared a video on Instagram of himself joining Ariana Grande on the yellow carpet on Thursday. He thanked her in the post, but commenters didn’t share his excitement.

Ariana Grande recently finished promoting “Wicked: For Good” with her co-stars in various cities globally. During a Q&A session about the film on Saturday in Century City, she didn’t discuss the Singapore leg of the tour. The next day, she attended the Academy’s Governors Awards in Hollywood, where Tom Cruise, Debbie Allen, Dolly Parton, and Wynn Thomas received honorary Oscars.

I’m so excited for the premiere of ‘Wicked: For Good’ on Monday in New York! And it’s amazing that Jeff Goldblum is playing the Wizard! It’s not long now until everyone can see it – the movie opens nationwide this Thursday, and I can hardly wait.
