Sunny Long and Barry ‘Bear’ Myrden, the couple from The Golden Bachelor, have revealed their secret romance. They had to keep it hidden for seven months, even while the show aired in Australia and viewers wondered who Bear would end up with.
As a lifestyle expert, I’ve seen firsthand how difficult it can be to maintain a connection when life pulls you in different directions. In the case of Bear and Sunny, things were particularly tough. They shared with me that the show’s producers kept them so separated, Bear genuinely worried Sunny might forget him during their time apart – it was a really vulnerable thing for him to admit!
‘When the cameras stopped rolling, I just said, “Do not forget about me”,’ Bear admitted.
The 61-year-old infrastructure engineer from the Northern Beaches explained that he saved her phone number under a false name to avoid suspicion if anyone looked at his phone.
‘I can actually put her name in my phone now because the secret name would pop up,’ he revealed.
Sunny, 58, admitted the months spent undercover were far tougher than viewers realise.
It was a difficult time, but he made a real effort to stay in touch, texting and calling me almost daily. She described him as a very romantic person.
The couple shared how they had to secretly meet in Sydney, arranged by the show’s producers, and stay connected through late-night calls. All this happened while the show’s trailers kept viewers wondering if their relationship would last.
Bear said they hadn’t seen each other often, but he was happy they could finally meet up for coffee and breakfast.
Sunny said the emotionally intense environment made everything feel raw and real.
‘I did not have any guards up at all,’ she explained.
‘My heart was sinking all the way down.’
Bear said he knew instantly that his feelings for Sunny were genuine.
‘We both said, “I love you”, so many times it is hard to know who said it first,’ he laughed.
Sunny insisted she likely said the L-word before he did.
‘If I feel something, I say it,’ she said.
Oh my gosh, they were finally seen out together, and it’s like everything is right in the world! It just feels…normal, you know? And Sunny? She said she never questioned how she felt, not even for a second. It’s so amazing to hear her say that, like her heart always knew! I’m seriously living for this.
‘For me, definitely real and genuine,’ she added.
‘I knew he was such a wonderful gentleman with a big heart.’
Bear described the situation as both surreal and ‘bizarre’.
‘You are pulled apart and told to live separate lives for months,’ he continued.
Even so, he remained consistent, sending her a simple message during their time apart: ‘Please think of me now and then’ – a message Sunny later shared with her daughters.
Sunny explained that they really bonded during a romantic getaway organized by the show’s producers.
‘I packed two bags with board games and chess because we did not know what to expect,’ she said.
‘But we talked nearly all night. Bear was so romantic and he listened intently because he cares.’
Okay, so Bear just casually dropped that they didn’t even use the board games! Like, at all! And the way he said it? It totally implied something amazing happened that night. I’m convinced it means their relationship got real real, you know? I’m practically screaming! It’s happening, it’s happening!
Even though Janette was devastated at the end of the show, Bear explained that she understood how close he was to Sunny.
‘I gave her plenty of opportunities,’ he said.
‘She is a lovely person, but I know I made the right choice and I have no regrets.’
Sunny said she respected Janette and even considered the possibility that Bear might choose her.
But she ultimately trusted her heart.
‘If he did not choose me, I would be very sad,’ she said.
‘But I would be happy for him and even Janette, because everyone deserves true love.’
The pair say they are continuing to take things slow and focusing first on blending their families.
‘We just want to integrate the two families together,’ Bear said.
‘Maybe plan something for Christmas. Just let it happen organically.’
Sunny said Bear is even more romantic off-camera than viewers saw.
‘There is no question my feelings for him are getting bigger and bigger,’ she said.
‘It is not only his choice. It was my choice too.’
Like the rest of Australia, the couple experienced the finale for the first time with a special viewing party – Bear hosted around 80 neighbors and friends in their neighborhood.
‘It portrayed us both in the truest form,’ he said.
Oh my gosh, it’s just so true! Everyone adores him – his neighbors, his friends, everyone! I seriously feel lucky just being around him and being part of the same community. It’s amazing to see how much love he gets, and I feel so privileged to witness it all!
