The popular TV series The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole Aged 13¾ is getting a fresh start after 40 years, with plans for a complete reboot.
The BBC is reportedly assembling a strong cast for the show, which is expected to premiere in late 2026.
Oh my gosh, it all started with Sue Townsend’s amazing book, and then ITV actually made it into a show in 1985! I was completely hooked! And then, unbelievably, they made another one, ‘The Growing Pains of Adrian Mole’, in 1987. I seriously couldn’t believe my luck – two shows about my absolute favorite character!
According to a source, the BBC is hoping to cast well-known actors in the upcoming reboot, recognizing how important and influential the original series was.
The show will maintain its humorous tone and stay true to the original work by Townsend, recognizing that many viewers grew up watching the series and reading the book.
Production is expected to begin at the start of next year, with the show possibly premiering near the end of 2026. Because it’s highly anticipated, it will likely be scheduled for a popular time slot.

The BBC has been contacted by the Daily Mail for comment.
As a lifestyle expert, I’ve seen a lot of coming-of-age stories, and this one really stands out. It’s written like a personal diary, giving you a really intimate look into the mind of a teenage boy who thinks he has it all figured out – but is actually wrestling with a lot of anxieties and things he wishes he’d done differently. It’s a relatable peek into the struggles of growing up, and how we all second-guess ourselves.
He writes candidly about the family dog, his parents’ marital troubles and life as a tortured poet.
The 1985 film, starring Gian Sammarco as Adrian, was based on a book by Townsend. Julie Walters played his mother, and Stephen Moore played his father.
Beryl Reid was also a main cast member as Adrian’s grandmother.
It was followed by a second series, The Growing Pains of Adrian Mole, based on the second book.
As a lifestyle expert, I’ve seen this beloved story really come to life in so many ways! Beyond the original book, it’s been wonderfully reimagined for the stage – first as a play back in 1984, and then as a full-blown musical that’s just as captivating.
It was a huge fan favourite in the 80s and many will no doubt be delighted it is coming back.
The series was mainly filmed on location in the Braunstone and South Wigston areas of Leicester.

The exterior shots of the Moles’ home and street were filmed on Ludlow Close in South Harrow. Adrian’s school scenes, supposedly at Neil Armstrong Comprehensive, were actually shot at Hammersmith School in West London.
Gian, the actor who played Adrian, is now 55 years old. He originally auditioned for the role along with about 100 other boys.
Besides starring in the two Adrian Mole series, he also appeared on television as a co-host of the children’s show Get Fresh in 1986 and as the character Whizzkid in a 1988 episode of Doctor Who called “The Greatest Show in the Galaxy.”
He last appeared on screen in the 1990s comedy series Jackson Pace: The Great Years, a show for kids that was similar to Indiana Jones. He starred in it with Keith Allen and Josie Lawrence.
