Many directors have worked on Marvel movies, each hoping to leave their own unique style on the franchise. Nia DaCosta aimed to do this with 2023’s The Marvels, a follow-up to her 2019 film Captain Marvel. She’s mentioned that making the movie wasn’t easy, but she doesn’t blame Marvel Studios. In fact, studio president Kevin Feige went above and beyond to help her out.
Nia DaCosta, the director of Candyman, signed on to direct The Marvels in 2020 and initially felt enthusiastic about working on a Marvel film. However, the movie, released during the 2023 SAG-AFTRA and Writers strikes, didn’t perform well in theaters and received mixed reactions. In early 2025, DaCosta revealed she didn’t have complete creative freedom during the filmmaking process and that a major challenge was the absence of a finalized script at the beginning of production.
I recently read an interview with Nia DaCosta in The Guardian, and it was interesting. Despite some things she said previously, she clarified there’s absolutely no bad blood between her and Marvel. In fact, she mentioned she just got back from a trip abroad with some of the people she worked with on the project, which seems to prove they’re still on good terms. It’s good to hear everything’s okay behind the scenes!
I have no bad feelings towards anyone involved. I recently visited the Avengers set because I’m still friends with the cast and crew.
We don’t know the exact date of this interview, but filming for the eagerly awaited Avengers: Doomsday took place in the UK for much of the last year. It’s nice to hear that the director of Little Woods remains friends with her previous colleagues and visited the set of Joe and Anthony Russo’s new superhero movie. What’s especially heartwarming is that Kevin Feige played a part in making that visit possible.
He wrote me a letter for my UK visa.

Are audiences starting to lose interest in superhero films? It seems like both Nia DaCosta, director of The Marvels, and James Gunn agree that might be the case.
Nia DaCosta seems to be in good standing with Marvel Studios, and I hope she gets another chance to direct a film with her own creative vision. She’s a talented storyteller who can make a really engaging movie if given the freedom to do so. However, I also get why she might not want to return to directing superhero films. She’s been busy working on other projects, including the recent drama Hedda and the upcoming 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple.
Honestly, it’s just good to see that director Nia DaCosta and Marvel Studios are on good terms – no bad blood at all. And I’ll admit, I’m a little jealous she got to work with the whole Avengers crew thanks to Kevin Feige. I would have loved to be a fly on the wall during those creative meetings – imagine the discussions!
