YouTube TV and Disney have reached a deal, ending weeks of frustration for subscribers. Channels like ESPN and ABC are now back in the lineup, meaning football fans could watch their games this weekend and will be able to enjoy Monday Night Football. While getting channels back is the immediate benefit, reports suggest the agreement also includes an important clause that could have a bigger impact in the future.
YouTube TV has previously expressed its desire to integrate content from other streaming services directly into its platform. The idea is similar to how Starz works within Amazon Prime – you can watch Starz shows without leaving the Prime app. While YouTube TV wants to offer this convenience, not all streaming services are on board. Many prefer that viewers use their individual apps, giving them greater control over ads and content recommendations.
According to Awful Announcing, a new deal will let YouTube TV include all the content from ESPN’s new streaming service, ESPN Unlimited, directly within its platform. This means viewers will eventually be able to watch events exclusive to ESPN Unlimited – like WWE pay-per-views – without switching apps or leaving YouTube TV. While the exact date isn’t known – it requires some technical work – it’s expected to happen around 2026.
This situation might seem minor if you don’t follow wrestling closely, but it highlights a bigger trend. YouTube TV could use this as a trial run to add content from other streaming services through new deals. Think about being able to watch shows from Peacock or Paramount Plus directly within YouTube TV. While adding Netflix would be tricky because it operates differently, YouTube TV would likely explore the possibility.
YouTube TV leaders have openly stated their goal to become the leading cable service in the US. There was speculation during talks with Disney that they hoped to lower their costs if they reached specific subscriber numbers. Regardless of whether that’s accurate, it’s evident they intend to continue expanding, which would strengthen their position and allow them to potentially partner with other streaming services.
The most important news right now is that ESPN, ABC, and other networks are back on our service. While that’s what matters most immediately, we might later realize that adding content through YouTube TV was the real breakthrough.
