Glen Powell Took A UPS Driver To SNL To Hilariously Prove He’s Not A Liar

People loved Glen Powell hosting Saturday Night Live! Many viewers declared last night’s episode the season’s best, and there’s already a lot of talk about him returning to host again and again. With his rising popularity, it’s easy to imagine him eventually joining the exclusive group of hosts who’ve done the show five or more times. Had the pandemic not happened, he might already be well on his way!

Colin Powell was originally scheduled to host the Christmas episode of Saturday Night Live in 2021, but plans changed when the release of Top Gun: Maverick was pushed back. Lorne Michaels, the show’s executive producer, worried Powell wasn’t a big enough name without the film, so Paul Rudd, a popular former host, took his place. Powell was very disappointed, as he’d always wanted to host SNL and was also embarrassed about a recent interaction he’d had with a UPS delivery driver.

In his stand-up routine, Powell recounted the story of how he found out he’d be hosting the show. He was with his entire family when he got the call offering him the job, which sparked a lively celebration. The excitement was briefly interrupted by a UPS driver delivering a package, who asked what all the fuss was about. Powell shared the good news – he was hosting SNL – and the driver was thrilled, leading to a joyful photo together.

Here’s a portion of the story in Powell’s own words…

I was with my family when I got the news, and we were completely ecstatic! We were jumping and yelling with excitement, and a UPS driver was right there making a delivery. He asked what all the commotion was about, and I told him I was going to be hosting Saturday Night Live. He couldn’t believe it, and I said, ‘Yes! It’s the Christmas episode, you should watch!’ We all quickly took a selfie with him to capture the moment.

Looking back, that photo feels a little strange now that Craig Ferguson isn’t hosting anymore. He actually made a funny comment about it during a show – he said he imagines the UPS guy is going around telling everyone he’s a liar, since Craig’s only had a tiny appearance on TV since they met!

Once he was asked to host the show again, his sisters – who were in the original photo – made it their goal to find the UPS delivery driver. They finally contacted him, and Powell arranged for him to fly out to Saturday Night Live to celebrate with everyone.

Honestly, the highlight of the show for me was when he brought Mitch – yeah, that same guy – onstage. They had such a genuinely warm and funny connection, the audience went wild! Everyone online is already buzzing about it, and you can check out the whole clip below. As an SNL fan, I totally get the hype!

Glen Powell’s popularity stems from his relatable personality. While he’s clearly good-looking and in great shape, he comes across as down-to-earth and genuine. This story really captures that quality – he seems like the kind of person who would genuinely celebrate a success with anyone, like a UPS driver after landing a spot on Saturday Night Live, and who would also happily splurge on a grand gesture, like flying someone to New York.

I fully anticipate Powell returning to Studio 8H eventually, and I’m sure Mitch from UPS will be thrilled when he does.

Saturday Night Live will be taking a break for Thanksgiving and will be back on December 6th with Melissa McCarthy hosting. It promises to be a great show!
