Ser Arthur Dayne, also known as the Sword of the Morning, is a fascinating character in the world of A Song of Ice and Fire. While Game of Thrones removed his famous sword, it ultimately improved the story. Episode 3 of season 6, “Oathbreaker,” finally showed the legendary battle that had only been hinted at in bits and pieces.
The Battle of the Tower of Joy was a key fight near the end of Robert’s Rebellion, and it remains a famously mysterious event. In a flashback, Bran Stark, using his ability to see the past, witnesses a young Eddard Stark leading a small group of five soldiers against two elite Targaryen knights: Dayne and Ser Gerold Hightower.
The Three-Eyed Raven calls Dayne “The Sword of the Morning” and seems very impressed by him. Dayne skillfully fights six soldiers with two swords, almost winning, before being unexpectedly stabbed in the back. This scene largely matches how George R.R. Martin described it, except for the specific weapons Dayne uses.
Giving Arthur Dayne Two Swords At The Tower Of Joy Was Better Than Giving Him Dawn

As a fan of the stories, I’ve always been fascinated by the title ‘Sword of the Morning.’ It’s given to the most honorable knight of House Dayne, but if no one proves worthy, the title just… waits. Arthur Dayne is legendary – widely considered one of the greatest knights who ever lived – and as the Sword of the Morning, he was the one chosen to wield ‘Dawn,’ the incredible greatsword that’s been passed down through House Dayne for generations.
Dawn, a sword described in the books as pale and made from a fallen meteorite, is comparable to Valyrian steel – it’s a really impressive weapon. Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear in the show wielded by Dayne. While fans were disappointed not to see it, its absence actually fits with the overall story of Game of Thrones.
The show doesn’t have time to detail every magical weapon. Giving Dayne two swords is a clever way to show he’s an exceptionally skilled knight, and it presents something truly unique to viewers.
The action sequences are really well done, and a standout moment is when Dayne swiftly blocks attacks from two opponents with a single move. It’s not quite as graceful as Dawn’s style, but it’s incredibly impressive.
Game Of Thrones Was Wise To Simplify Characters

Look, I know the ending of Game of Thrones left a lot of us disappointed, but it’s easy to forget just how well the show did for so many seasons. Adapting those books was incredibly difficult, and honestly, the showrunners had a tough job streamlining characters and storylines to make it work on television. It’s that success earlier on that makes the rushed ending sting so much, but we have to remember how much they did get right.
As a huge fan of George R.R. Martin’s world, I get why it’s taken him so long to finish the books – there are just so many characters! And honestly, I think the show, Game of Thrones, had to take some liberties with the story. They couldn’t stop everything to explain every little detail, like where every magical weapon came from. Sometimes you just have to keep the plot moving!
