‘The Goonies’ Sequel Gets Huge Production Update from Ke Huy Quan

A sequel to the classic 1985 adventure film The Goonies was announced earlier this year, four decades after the original became a cultural phenomenon. While details have been kept secret, Ke Huy Quan, who played Data in the first movie, has confirmed that a script for the sequel has been completed. Could The Goonies 2 actually be happening soon?

A sequel to The Goonies was announced several months ago, with Steven Spielberg and Chris Columbus both returning. While Columbus will now be a producer instead of the writer, he and Spielberg are still expected to contribute to the story’s development. The script is being written by Potsy Ponciroli. Warner Bros. hasn’t shared any other details about the sequel yet, but more information is expected soon.

While speaking with Comic Book about Zootopia 2, Ke Huy Quan revealed some information. He indicated he’s working on the film in some capacity, and didn’t confirm or deny if he’ll reprise his role as Data. Most importantly, the Oscar winner shared that a script exists and those in charge are pleased with its progress – which is the biggest update we’ve had so far.

I first learned about this project when I saw Steven Spielberg, who was really enthusiastic about it. We’re working to make it happen, and I’m feeling optimistic. While we’ve been trying for forty years, I have a good feeling about this attempt. This time, both Chris Columbus and Spielberg are involved in development, and we have a fantastic writer. I’ve heard the second draft is finished and they’re very pleased with it.

I told Fortune Feimster that I’m committed to making it happen, and I really want her to be involved. I’d love to play that character again and go on another adventure with the rest of the cast from The Goonies.

Is the Original Cast of ‘The Goonies’ Returning for the Sequel?

The narrative is crucial to this project, but finding the right actors is even more important. The biggest secret right now is who will star in The Goonies 2, and those involved will likely keep it under wraps for as long as possible. Fans are hoping to see the original cast return, but a key question is whether a movie centered around the now-adult Goonies would actually work. It’s been 40 years since we last saw them battling the Fratellis, and a lot has changed.

Josh Brolin, known for his role as Brand Walsh in The Goonies, has expressed concerns about a potential sequel. He worries that revisiting the film could damage his fond memories of the original. He explained that he doesn’t want a new movie to diminish the impact of The Goonies, imagining a scenario where revisiting the characters later in life might feel awkward or disappointing. He’s hesitant about the idea, questioning whether a sequel would truly be a good thing.
