Michael Downs, the newest and most talked-about housemate on Big Brother Australia, wasn’t originally supposed to be a contestant.
The Daily Mail has learned that 47-year-old publisher John was originally going to appear as a late arrival on the upcoming season of Married At First Sight. However, producers decided against this plan at the last minute because they couldn’t find a compatible partner for him.
A source close to the production team says Endemol Shine Australia had been talking to Michael for several months and planned to introduce him to Married at First Sight later in the season to add some drama.
According to a source, producers really believed Michael would make for compelling television. He’s known for being determined, direct, and saying exactly what’s on his mind. However, they struggled to find a suitable match for him because he had very specific requirements for a partner. They simply couldn’t find a bride who fit his description.
Another source added that producers felt ‘backed into a corner’ as the filming deadline approached.
‘They tried every avenue, but nothing fit,’ the second insider explained.

He refused to meet them halfway, and they didn’t want to create a forced, unrealistic pairing just for the sake of entertainment. Ultimately, they decided to end his involvement for now, but left the possibility of bringing him back for future episodes open.
Instead, Michael was moved to another reality show, the Australian version of Big Brother, which was produced by the same company. Executives thought his personality would be a better fit there.
And it hasn’t taken long for the outspoken father-of-three to make waves.
Michael walked into the house and explained he ran a media company that often caused controversy, particularly with its views on cyclists and current social issues.
His casting caused immediate concern among viewers, as Big Brother has strict rules preventing anyone connected to the media from participating.
The Daily Mail has verified that these rules were included in the original contract for the show, as set by Endemol Shine Australia.
After facing increasing complaints, Network 10 released a statement explaining Michael’s role and why he was permitted on the premises.
According to a representative, Michael leads a publishing company responsible for popular national magazines like FHM, Women’s Fitness, Krash, and It Girl.

According to a company spokesperson, they handle the printing and distribution of the magazines, and this process doesn’t break any of their casting guidelines.
Asked why he was chosen for the show, the representative explained that his unique personality and background helped him get selected.
Michael is direct and has strong opinions, but he’s also a grounded and mature presence in the house. As a single father of three teenagers, he offers a unique perspective that no one else in the group shares.
Those involved with the show say Big Brother producers are actually very happy with how things turned out, despite the contestant joining in an unconventional way.
According to a source involved in the production, he’s a controversial and outspoken figure who isn’t afraid of conflict. They say that makes him exactly the type of personality producers are hoping to cast.
Viewers seem to be responding well to Michael. He’s quickly become a prominent figure in the house, sparking both strong support and criticism with his outspoken opinions.
Daily Mail has approached Channel Ten for comment.
