Apple TV has become a major player in streaming, known for its high-quality original shows, including several Emmy winners. But not every show is a success, and the thriller series is one example of a program that hasn’t quite resonated with viewers and critics.
The show began streaming on Apple TV on October 10th and has several episodes left in its first season. While it didn’t receive overwhelmingly positive feedback, with reviews being mixed, viewers are still tuning in. According to FlixPatrol, The Last Frontier is steadily climbing the charts.
Following the release of Episode 7, titled “Change of Time,” The Last Frontier climbed the charts, surpassing the popular show The Morning Show and landing in second place. Pluribus, the new science fiction series from Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan, remains at number one.
Even though reviews for The Last Frontier were somewhat mixed, it still performed well against popular Apple TV+ shows like The Morning Show. After its most recent episode aired, The Last Frontier moved ahead of both The Morning Show (now in third place) and Palm Royale (in fifth). Other shows on the charts included Down Cemetery Road and Loot.
This ten-episode thriller, from the creators of The Blacklist, centers on a U.S. Marshal stationed in a small Alaskan town. When a plane crash unleashes a group of escaped fugitives, he’s tasked with protecting the town’s residents. But he soon begins to wonder if the crash was truly accidental.
The film features a strong cast, including Jason Clarke as U.S. Marshal Frank Remnick, alongside Dominic Cooper, Haley Bennett, Alfre Woodard, and John Slattery.
The Last Frontier Didn’t Impress the Critics on Rotten Tomatoes
The streaming service has had hits with its original content, but not everything resonates with viewers and critics. While some shows and movies are popular, others have received poor reviews, with initial critic scores around 57% and declining further.
Currently, critics haven’t been impressed with Season 1, giving it a 46% rating based on 24 reviews. Audience scores are also low, at 57%, resulting in an overall negative reception.
Okay, let me tell you, I rarely say this, but this show was genuinely awful. Apple TV usually delivers really solid content, so I was shocked. Honestly, it’s not just the worst thing on Apple TV – it’s one of the worst things I’ve seen on pretty much any streaming service. The plot was just…silly, totally unbelievable, and frankly, ridiculous. I couldn’t believe what I was watching.
One viewer called it “absolutely terrible” and nearly unwatchable, pointing out many plot holes, unbelievable situations, and overused tropes. They felt parts of it resembled a low-quality video game, and expressed disappointment considering Jason Clarke is a talented actor who usually appears in good movies.
Joshua M. Patton noted that The Last Frontier relies too much on familiar tropes and its characters aren’t particularly complex. He pointed out the show’s simplistic morality, stating that it portrays police as unequivocally good and criminals as entirely villainous, rarely showing the latter as fully realized people.
The Last Frontier returns with new episodes on Fridays on Apple TV until Season 1 wraps on Dec. 5.
