The Marvel Cinematic Universe is heading towards the conclusion of its Multiverse Saga, with Avengers: Doomsday scheduled for release next year, followed by Avengers: Secret Wars. While it’s unclear what Marvel has planned after these films, a recent rumor suggests that Doctor Strange 3 could be one of the next projects.
Nexus Point News is reporting that Marvel Studios is beginning early development on Doctor Strange 3, with potential production starting after Secret Wars. While this is just a rumor and should be treated with skepticism, it includes some intriguing details, particularly regarding a director Benedict Cumberbatch is reportedly keen on.
Benedict Cumberbatch Reportedly Wants An Oscar-Winning Filmmaker For Doctor Strange 3
Rumor has it that Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays Doctor Strange, is hoping to get Sam Mendes to direct the next Doctor Strange movie. It would be a surprising pick – Mendes hasn’t directed a big superhero film before – but fans would likely be excited to see his vision for the project.
If the rumors are true, Sam Mendes would be an excellent pick for the next Doctor Strange film. He has a proven track record of successfully joining established franchises and delivering fantastic results – remember his work on Skyfall, considered one of the best James Bond movies? Beyond that, his creative vision – demonstrated in visually stunning films like the single-shot 1917 and his Academy Award-winning American Beauty – would be a perfect fit for the unique style of a Doctor Strange movie.

Disney+ offers streaming access to movies like Doctor Strange and many other Marvel films and shows. You can subscribe for as little as $11.99 per month with ads. For an ad-free experience, it’s $18.99 monthly, or you can save 16% by paying $189.99 for a full year. See the deal here.
The main challenge in getting Sam Mendes to direct Doctor Strange 3 would be his busy schedule. He’s committed to a large-scale four-movie project about The Beatles, which is slated to begin filming soon and won’t be released until 2028. This means Mendes will likely be unavailable, especially if Doctor Strange 3 is planned as one of the first films in Marvel’s Phase 7 – it’s hard to believe we’re already discussing Phase 7! – and the timing doesn’t align.
Hiring Sam Mendes would be a departure from the previous directors of the Doctor Strange films, Scott Derrickson and Sam Raimi, both of whom are known for their work in horror. Mendes doesn’t have a background in horror, suggesting the franchise might be moving towards a different style or mood.
The Future Of Doctor Strange In The MCU Is Murky
A major question fans have is what will happen to Doctor Strange in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after the current storyline about the multiverse concludes. It’s currently unclear if or when Benedict Cumberbatch will reprise the role in future Avengers movies. Cumberbatch initially suggested he wouldn’t be involved in the upcoming Doomsday film, but later hinted he might be. However, his name wasn’t included when the cast for Avengers: Doomsday was officially announced.
Okay, so if these rumors about a Doctor Strange 3 are true, the biggest takeaway for me is that Benedict Cumberbatch is apparently on board to keep playing the Sorcerer Supreme. Honestly, with Marvel seemingly ready to shake things up and potentially recast a lot of their heroes after Avengers: Secret Wars, that’s actually pretty significant. It suggests Strange might be one of the few characters sticking around, and I’m definitely curious to see how that plays out.
While you wait, you can watch the first two Doctor Strange movies, and many other Marvel Cinematic Universe films, with a Disney+ subscription.
