As a longtime fan and recent rewatcher of The Office, what consistently impresses me is the show’s masterful long game. It wasn’t about shocking twists for shock value; the writers expertly laid groundwork for bigger stories over time. A perfect example? Season 5. Looking back, the seeds of a major plot point – Michael Scott’s eventual departure from Dunder Mifflin – are subtly planted throughout those early episodes, making the impact of his quitting all the more satisfying when it finally happens. It’s a testament to the show’s clever writing that these storylines unfold so naturally.
Let’s clarify – this isn’t about Steve Carell moving to Colorado with Holly. His final departure from the show happened a few seasons after that. However, in Season 5, his character, Michael, surprisingly decided to leave Dunder Mifflin. Considering how dedicated he’d always been, it seemed shocking… but it wasn’t entirely unexpected. While Charles Miner’s arrival definitely triggered Michael’s decision to leave, I believe Idris Elba’s character was the final push that made it happen.
Let’s take a look at some of the events earlier in Season 5 that led to Michael’s breaking point.

Holly Gets Transferred To Nashua
When I first watched the show, I never would have predicted that Amy Ryan’s character would end up being Michael Scott’s soulmate. But looking back at their relationship and how it developed, it’s clear they were a perfect match all along.
Michael and Holly’s new relationship quickly ended when David Wallace discovered it and transferred Holly to another branch. While it seemed like a harsh move, David had good reason to be worried. Michael’s previous office romance led to a costly legal deposition that almost caused major financial trouble for the company. Considering that history, David’s caution was understandable.

The Disappointing Business Trip
Michael was excited about his work trip to Winnipeg, but everything went wrong. He even tried to cheer himself up with a brief romance at the hotel, but nothing helped. By the end of the trip, he was complaining to David Wallace about how terrible it was and how upset he still was about Holly leaving. While the trip didn’t make Michael quit, it clearly showed he was still heartbroken, and even a comfortable flight to Canada couldn’t fix that.

Toby Returns
Michael reacted with disbelief and dismay – shouting “No, God, please, no!” – when he found out Toby was back from Costa Rica. While it’s not a quitting offense, Toby’s return likely didn’t improve anyone’s mood in the office, and it certainly explains the negative atmosphere at this time.

Michael’s Moral Dilemma Over Prince Family Paper’s Client List
Before this episode, Michael visited David in New York for a casual lunch where they chatted about everyday things. David was subtly trying to figure out how Michael was successfully managing his office. This suggested Michael’s work life was improving. However, things took a turn with the “Prince Family Paper” episode, which focused on Michael being asked to investigate a rival paper company.
Coming up with a plan to get the information was one thing, but Michael was really hesitant to hand over the client list, knowing it could hurt the local family business. Dwight actually had to physically take the list from him. It’s easy to see how this whole situation bothered Michael and made him uncomfortable with his work.

Michael’s Golden Ticket Idea Backfiring
Michael Scott from The Office wasn’t always the cause of trouble, and he even had some good ideas occasionally. His “Golden Ticket” promotion was a chaotic experience – it initially seemed like a costly mistake, but then things surprisingly turned around. However, that success didn’t last. Michael’s attempts to avoid responsibility and then take all the credit created a huge mess, ultimately leading to David Wallace angrily leaving the Scranton branch.
David’s annoyance with Dwight’s chaotic safety training in the fantastic episode “Stress Relief” likely contributed to the growing tension we see here. Considering all that, it’s not surprising he’d seek assistance in running the branch.

And Then, Charles Miner
The episode “New Boss” introduces Charles Miner, played by Idris Elba, and he immediately disrupts Michael’s plans for a 15th-year work anniversary celebration with his focus on cutting costs and strict rules. To make things even worse, when Michael tries to call David to vent, the call gets forwarded to Charles. That really seems to push Michael over the edge. Considering everything that’s happening, it’s clear from Michael’s reaction – even a party and a peace offering of figs won’t be enough to keep him from wanting to leave Dunder Mifflin.
Figuring out why Pam quit with Michael is a little more complicated. She was definitely feeling stuck, especially after coming back from New York and dealing with the frustrating new copier. But her sudden decision actually worked out for her – she left the reception desk and eventually became a salesperson at Dunder Mifflin, and later cleverly worked her way into an office administrator position. So, all things considered, it wasn’t a terrible choice for a character on The Office.
Like many shows, The Office had a few continuity errors – things that didn’t always quite add up. If you watch it closely enough, you might spot some inconsistencies. But the show usually kept the important details straight, so fans generally didn’t mind minor slip-ups, like when Meredith briefly mentioned a second child we never saw or heard about again.
