The show Pluribus is about a third of the way through its first season, and the third episode, “Grenade,” really elevates the story. As Carol adjusts to a world where everyone is linked by a shared consciousness – except for her and twelve others – she’s constantly uncovering new information.
Episode 3 reveals Carol may be incredibly powerful – potentially the most powerful character ever seen on TV. We already learned she can cause widespread death when angered, but this episode hints her power goes even further. It doesn’t seem to depend on her taking action, but rather on the willingness of everyone on Earth to do whatever she wants.
Carol Slowly Begins to Understand the Extent of Her Power
In the most recent episode, Carol is growing more and more distressed by the situation. Her friend Zosia consistently tries to offer comfort and encourage her to join them, but these efforts only make things worse. Even reminding Carol of happy memories with Helen doesn’t help. She desperately asks them to erase everything they’ve learned from Helen, but they retain even small details – like the contents of her refrigerator, which they know thanks to a conversation with the cleaning lady.
Carol was feeling so restless that she went to the grocery store, hoping for a little bit of normal life, even though her neighbors had just brought her breakfast. But when she got there, she found the store was almost empty – they’d combined everything to make shopping easier. Carol wasn’t happy about it and insisted she wanted the old store back.
Trucks quickly deliver food and supplies, and the workers immediately restock the shelves for Carol’s benefit. In that moment, she senses the degree of control she wields, though she doesn’t fully realize it. It’s clear they’ll do anything to keep her content. This serves two purposes: it aligns with their values of peace, love, and togetherness, and it’s essential to keeping others safe – because if Carol gets upset, innocent people could suffer.
Honestly, seeing a whole grocery store magically refilled just for me wasn’t even the biggest shock. It was… the grenade. That’s what really got to me, and it’s what I keep thinking about. It wasn’t the spectacle, it was that.
The Hand Grenade Ask Blew Her Mind
Carol is in a difficult situation in the show, which has received positive feedback so far. She strongly dislikes the values of the people around her, but she’s also very isolated. She spends her evenings drinking and watching The Golden Girls. One night, when the power goes out, she discovers the entire neighborhood is dark. Frustrated, she exclaims aloud, and immediately the lights flicker back on, followed by a phone call. It’s as if Carol has a strange power – whatever she says seems to come true.
Zosia explained that the lights flickering off was just a mix-up. They were actually trying to switch off everyone except me, to save energy, because they consider my work ‘essential’ – that’s what they told me! She even offered to turn all the lights back on if it would make me feel better, saying they’d even bend their own rules to keep me happy.
Carol, increasingly annoyed by Zosia’s attempts to make her feel better, snaps with sarcasm, suggesting a hand grenade would solve all her problems. To Carol’s shock, Zosia actually returns with one, apologizing for the delay and explaining they weren’t sure if Carol was serious. Carol dismisses it, assuming the grenade is a fake or harmless. Despite her skepticism, and overwhelmed by loneliness, she invites Zosia inside, grateful for the company.
During their conversation, Carol becomes increasingly upset realizing everyone is trying to change her to be like them. Zosia tries to present it as a rescue mission, suggesting Carol is struggling and they’re offering help. However, when Zosia mentions something Helen said, Carol finally reaches her breaking point.
She picked up the grenade and pulled the pin, immediately making Zosia nervous. Zosia cautioned her, realizing it wasn’t a fake, and alerted Carol to the danger. Just in time, Zosia snatched the grenade and threw it out the window, then quickly pulled Carol to safety. Carol was surprised by how devoted these people were – they’d completely abandoned logic and common sense just to please her.
A Young Man Provides Insight That Could Change The Game
At the hospital, while Zosia was being cared for after her injury, Carol encountered one of the staff members treating her in the waiting room. To see how far they would go, Carol decided to test their procedures. She jokingly asked if they would give her a hand grenade, and the staff member casually replied that they would, since she had asked. Carol then pressed further, wondering why they wouldn’t just provide a harmless fake, and if they’d fulfill another request if she made one. He simply said, “Yes, absolutely.”
She pushes the situation further, jokingly asking if she could request something extreme like a bazooka or rocket and if she’d actually receive it. She continues to escalate, asking about a tank and even an atom bomb, simply for the thrill of destruction. He’s clearly uneasy but explains that if she truly wanted something so powerful, they would carefully discuss the risks and consequences with her. However, he admits that if she still insisted, they would ultimately fulfill her request, though they wouldn’t be comfortable doing so. “We’d do anything to make you happy, Carol,” he says.
What This Discovery Means For Carol
Carol seemed surprised by his honesty, but a small spark of hope appeared in her eyes. After he left, she tilted her head, considering. If she could convince them that making her happy – perhaps even finding a way to save her from becoming part of the hive mind and undoing this whole situation – would be enough, maybe they’d listen.
Carol’s strength isn’t about superpowers; it’s about her own will and ability to think for herself. She doesn’t need to be anything special. With just a snap of her fingers, she can get anything she desires – the entire world caters to her every whim. Whether it’s a fully stocked grocery store, a favorite meal delivered anywhere, or even something dangerous like a weapon, nothing is beyond her reach. Twelve others share this ability, but as the story’s main character, Carol demonstrates a level of power unlike anything we’ve seen before.
Carol currently has a significant ability, but it won’t last. Zosia and her team are working tirelessly to bring Carol over to their side, though scientific challenges mean it could take weeks or even months. This gives Carol a limited window to learn how to use her newfound power and achieve her goals before time runs out.
Carol has the power to benefit herself while she can, but it seems she’ll instead focus on fixing the world. Others, like Koumba, are simply enjoying the changes. Meanwhile, Laxmi and Kusimayu are determined to keep things as they are, even though it means their families are under mind control.
Currently, Carol is the most powerful character on TV, despite sharing her abilities with twelve others who haven’t fully embraced them. What she decides to do with this newfound power could drastically change everything.
