The upcoming Tom Holland movie about Fred Astaire is facing problems, and Fred Astaire’s widow is speaking out about the issues.
As a lifelong fan of Fred Astaire, I was really surprised to hear about this! Apparently, Robyn Astaire, Fred’s daughter, sent a legal notice to Amy Pascal at Sony. According to TMZ, she wants to make it very clear that neither she, nor the estate, has given any approval for the project that was first announced way back in 2021. It’s a bit concerning to see this happening without their blessing.
She stated in court filings that his will clearly indicated he didn’t want his life made into a movie or show, and she is committed to honoring that request.
Fred Astaire, who passed away in 1987, is celebrated as one of Hollywood’s most talented dancers. He entertained people for 76 years through performances in 49 movies, as well as on stage and television.
When Fred was most popular in the late 1930s, his legs were insured for a million dollars, highlighting how important he was to the film studios.
As a longtime fan, I completely understand why Robyn is so fiercely protective of his father’s artistic vision. He’s made it clear that anyone wanting to tell Fred’s story in a film needs to respect his wishes, and honestly, they should – it’s a legacy worth honoring, and messing with it could be a real mistake.

She emphasizes that the estate hasn’t approved any planned biopic and warns that she will take legal action against anyone who suggests she has given her blessing to the project.
DailyMail.com has reached out to Holland’s reps but has not received a comment.
In 2021, Holland expressed his enthusiasm for the part, stating he was ‘very excited’ and confidently adding that he already had some tap dancing experience.
He mentioned Pascal had the script and shared that he’d just had a nice FaceTime call with her while he was in the bath. Despite that, he confirmed he would still be playing Fred Astaire.
This news arrived thirteen years after Holland first gained recognition, playing the role of young dancer Billy Elliot in a West End stage production.
Okay, seriously, this guy was born to play this part! I mean, he’s been dancing since he was a kid – street dance, acrobatics, the whole nine yards. And then, Billy Elliot?! That’s where he perfected his tap! It’s like his whole life has been leading up to this, honestly. He’s got the moves, the training, everything! I knew he’d be perfect!
Tom Holland mentioned in a 2021 Variety interview that he’s a skilled tap dancer, having practiced it for many years and feeling confident he could quickly learn any new choreography.
He said his dancing in Billy Elliot was very different from the style of Fred Astaire, and he understands he needs to learn a completely new technique.

‘Fred Astaire does have a very particular style,’ Holland continued.
Billy Elliot’s tap dancing was raw and energetic, while my style is more refined and graceful, so I’ll need to adapt my technique.
I’m really looking forward to working on this, and I believe the final film will be great.
A movie about the life of Fred will almost certainly showcase his amazing 76-year career, especially his famous partnership with Ginger Rogers.
The biography will likely delve into his personal life, covering the loss of his first wife in 1954 and his experiences raising their children.
Fred Astaire, originally named Frederick Austerlitz, grew up in Nebraska where his father was a brewer. He began performing with his sister, Adele, at the young age of five, and later moved to Hollywood in 1932.

He soon became a major star in Hollywood, partnering with Ginger Rogers in the 1933 film Flying Down to Rio and in nine other successful movies, such as Top Hat, which received four Academy Award nominations.
Fred Astaire was incredibly valuable to movie studios during his peak popularity in the late 1930s—his legs were even insured for $1 million.
He went on to star in a string of popular musicals like The Gay Divorcee, Follow the Fleet, Swing Time, and Shall We Dance. He then transitioned to more serious acting roles, receiving a Golden Globe nomination for On the Beach in 1959 and an Academy Award nomination for The Towering Inferno in 1974.
Fred consistently won Golden Globe and BAFTA awards, solidifying his place as a legendary and long-lasting figure in Hollywood.
