Avatar: Fire & Ash’s Returning Villain Is Having An Identity Crisis As James Cameron Hints At Shocking Alliance

As a huge fan, I’m getting really excited about where the story is going with the next Avatar movie! James Cameron has hinted that things are about to get much more complicated for the villain, Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang), with a surprising new partnership forming. After loving The Way of Water in 2022, I can’t wait to see Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and other familiar characters return in the third installment of the franchise.

In an interview with Empire, director James Cameron discussed the future of Colonel Quaritch in the upcoming film Fire and Ash. He explained that the resurrected villain will undergo a complex internal journey, questioning his own identity. Stephen Lang’s character will be exploring who he is, and this self-discovery will largely revolve around his relationship with Spider (Jack Champion).

Quaritch is struggling with a major identity crisis. He’s fascinated by Jake Sully’s son because he’s trying to figure out if he’s truly a new individual, or if he’s still defined by the memories and personality of the person he was originally based on. It’s a deep, philosophical question about who he is.

Cameron suggests this period of introspection could be a key moment for the character. He wonders, “When will he fully identify with the Na’vi and stop seeing himself as human?”

Director James Cameron hints that a key part of Colonel Quaritch’s story arc might involve him developing a connection with Eywa, Pandora’s unique life force. Cameron suggests Jake Sully wants to help Quaritch establish this connection, saying, “He could plug in.” The director remains tight-lipped about the specifics, but emphasizes that Jake would prefer to have Quaritch as an ally, and we’ll see this dynamic unfold in future films.

In the upcoming film, Fire and Ash, Jake and Quaritch might unexpectedly team up. They’re beginning to realize they share common goals. Director James Cameron explains that constantly pitting the two against each other for three movies would become repetitive. He says the story will become more complex, and Quaritch’s character will undergo significant development, with his motivations and inner life being explored in depth.

James Cameron recently shared some hints about the plot of Avatar: Fire and Ash with Empire magazine, along with two new photos from the film. One image depicts a wounded Jake Sully reaching out urgently, while the other shows a rare calm moment for Colonel Quaritch. You can see the photos below.

As a huge Avatar fan, I was shocked when Quaritch died in the first film, but even more surprised by his return in the sequel! They brought him back as this ‘recombinant’ – basically, a Na’vi body with Quaritch’s memories downloaded into it. He’s still the main bad guy in Avatar: The Way of Water, but the ending really threw me. It seemed like he genuinely cared for Spider, his son, which added a really interesting layer to his character. It makes things so much more complicated than just a simple villain-hero dynamic!

In The Way of Water, Quaritch goes through a Na’vi ritual by bonding with his own Ikran, and Spider helps him learn the Na’vi language. While trailers for Fire and Ash hint at a partnership between Quaritch and the Ash People, James Cameron implies that Quaritch’s story will be far more complex in the complete movie.

The changes to the character Quaritch are important for the future of the Avatar movies. James Cameron has already written scripts for Avatar 4 and 5, but whether those films get made depends on how well Avatar: Fire and Ash performs. If audiences continue to enjoy the series, the fourth and fifth installments could showcase a significantly altered version of Quaritch.
