The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) was originally celebrated for its tightly woven stories, where each film and series connected to create a larger, unified narrative. But as the MCU expands with more movies, shows, and specials, it’s becoming harder to manage all the different plotlines, character developments, and unresolved questions.
With so many stories in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s natural that some plotlines fade away. But some unresolved storylines are particularly annoying because Marvel introduced them with exciting twists, hinting at future developments, and then simply dropped them.
The Celestials Promise to Judge the Earth
The movie Eternals leaves several intriguing storylines hanging, including a major plot twist. After the Eternals successfully prevent a catastrophic event and save Earth, they’re unexpectedly confronted by Arishem the Judge, who appears and abducts Sersi, Kingo, and Phastos. He intends to question their actions and ends the film with a warning that he will return to judge humanity.
The movie Eternals introduced a huge storyline that Marvel likely won’t address again. The film wasn’t well-received by critics or audiences and was a major disappointment for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Four years later, there are no plans for a sequel or any spin-offs, and none of the characters from Eternals are scheduled to appear in future Marvel projects. Aside from a brief appearance by Tiamut in Captain America: Brave New World, it seems Marvel is trying to move past the film and its unresolved plot points.
Eternals Introduces Thanos’s Brother Eros
At the end of the movie Eternals, after the credits start, Thena, Makkari, and Druig are shown traveling on a spaceship, looking for other Eternals. Instead, they are found when two strange people come onto their ship. They meet Pip, a troll, who then introduces his boss, Eros – Thanos’s brother.
The introduction of Thanos’s brother, Eros, immediately raised a lot of questions – especially about their strikingly different appearances. This scene also hinted at a deeper dive into the history of the Deviants and Eternals, and how they connect to the powerful Celestials. There was a lot of excitement about Harry Styles potentially playing Eros in future movies, but that speculation has faded. Like the rest of the Eternals cast, it’s still unclear what role, if any, Styles will have in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Sharon Carter Is the Power Broker
A major surprise in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is the reveal that Sharon Carter, who has ties to both Peggy Carter and Steve Rogers, is actually the Power Broker, a criminal mastermind. Throughout the series, she cleverly avoids being caught by the heroes and manages to regain favor with the U.S. government. The very last scene shows her officially back in a government position, which will allow her to access resources and technology to continue funding her criminal activities for the foreseeable future.
Fans have been waiting for over four years for the story thread involving the Power Broker, which was last seen in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. It seemed like a setup for the planned Armor Wars movie, focusing on stolen Stark technology. But with the Multiverse Saga nearing its end, that movie might not happen, meaning we may never learn the fate of the Power Broker in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Dane Whitman Is the Black Knight
Okay, so I’m still bugged by something from Eternals that happened back in 2021. Remember Dane Whitman, played by Kit Harington? He was Sersi’s love interest, but honestly, he didn’t do much in the movie besides vaguely hinting at some complicated family stuff. The big tease came in the post-credits scene: he’s about to grab this sword that’s clearly important to his family history, and then… BAM! Mahershala Ali’s Blade shows up and interrupts. Four years later, and we still haven’t gotten any resolution to that cliffhanger! It’s frustrating, honestly.
The scene after the credits rolled was intended to introduce Dane Whitman as the Black Knight, a character from Marvel’s comics. The idea was that Black Knight would eventually join forces with heroes like Blade, potentially creating a team called the Midnight Sons. However, because the Blade movie has been repeatedly delayed, those plans for the Midnight Sons have been put on hold or scrapped altogether. Kit Harington, who played Dane Whitman, has often said he doesn’t expect to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but he’s willing to reprise the role if Marvel asks him to.
Rhodey Was Replaced by a Skrull
A good plot twist should be surprising, but the reveal in Marvel’s Secret Invasion didn’t quite deliver. The Disney+ series showed that shapeshifting Skrulls had replaced important people – politicians, journalists, and even heroes. However, many viewers predicted the reveal that James Rhodes, also known as War Machine, was one of the impostors, even from the beginning of the show. In fact, Secret Invasion suggested Rhodey might have been replaced a long time ago, potentially right after the events of Captain America: Civil War.
As a fan, I’m really disappointed with how the Rhodey reveal in Secret Invasion is playing out. It felt like a big deal to discover he was a Skrull, but it doesn’t seem to be going anywhere now. We haven’t seen him since the show ended, even though the real Rhodey was supposedly saved. I was excited about Armor Wars continuing that story, but it’s looking like that project might not happen at all. And with Don Cheadle’s involvement in the next Avengers movies still uncertain, I’m starting to worry that Secret Invasion might be the last time we ever see Rhodey on screen. It’s a frustrating situation, honestly.
Venom’s Vacation to the MCU
In Spider-Man: No Way Home, characters from different universes arrive in the main Marvel Cinematic Universe (Earth-616), including Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock (Venom). While Eddie and Venom initially appear in a brief scene after the credits of Venom: Let There Be Carnage, they don’t play a significant role in No Way Home‘s main plot. They reappear in a mid-credits scene, relaxing at a bar on a tropical island and learning about this new world. Before being sent back to their own universe, Venom leaves a small piece of his symbiote behind, suggesting a future team-up with Spider-Man.
It’s unclear if the symbiote seen in the post-credits scene of a previous Spider-Man movie will reappear in future films, including Spider-Man: Brand New Day. It feels just as possible that the Marvel Cinematic Universe will simply ignore it. This plot point was introduced before plans for the next Spider-Man trilogy were solid. With Destin Daniel Cretton now leading the franchise, it’s uncertain whether Venom will be included. Venom: The Last Dance attempted to resolve this loose end by having a government agent capture the symbiote sample, but this doesn’t feel complete because The Last Dance takes place in a separate universe from the original post-credits scene in No Way Home.
Zeus Survived and Is Plotting Revenge With Hercules
The movie Thor: Love and Thunder brought several new ideas into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, ranging from the silly to the potentially significant. A particularly interesting addition was the introduction of Zeus and other groups of gods. During a fight, Thor and his allies appear to kill Zeus, but a scene after the credits showed that Zeus actually survived and has dispatched his son, Hercules, to seek revenge on Thor.
As a huge Marvel fan, I was really intrigued by that post-credits scene in Love and Thunder! It definitely hints at a massive showdown between Thor and Hercules, pitting the Norse and Greek gods against each other – talk about an epic battle! But honestly, with Chris Hemsworth hinting he might be stepping away after Avengers: Secret Wars, I’m worried Marvel won’t have enough time to properly set up and pay off this storyline. We’ve only got a couple of years left, and right now, it doesn’t feel like they’re on track to deliver. It’s a shame, because the potential is huge!
She-Hulk’s Intelligencia Reveal Is Underwhelming
While many Marvel fans had issues with She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, one particularly weak point was the portrayal of the Intelligencia. In the comics, this group is a powerful alliance of supervillainous masterminds led by the Leader. However, the show surprisingly revealed them to be simply an online forum of frustrated men upset about their dating lives.
The Intelligencia storyline felt more underwhelming than confusing, and many questions about the group remain. They possessed impressive resources, like the technology to create a Hulk serum – something many powerful entities would covet. Simply explaining this through Todd’s wealth isn’t enough. Unfortunately, due to the show She-Hulk‘s mixed reception, the deeper mysteries surrounding the Intelligencia likely won’t be explored further.
Marc Spector’s Third Identity is Revealed
The series Moon Knight was unexpectedly engaging, focusing on the divided life of Marc Spector and his alter ego, Steven Grant. Oscar Isaac’s portrayal of both characters made it easy for viewers to connect with them as they tried to coexist. But the season ended with a shocking twist: the introduction of a third, much more aggressive personality within Marc Spector – Jake Lockley.
The surprise appearance of Jake Lockley at the end of Moon Knight felt like a setup for a second season, but Disney+ hasn’t renewed the show yet. After three years, it’s still unclear what the future holds for Moon Knight within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Oscar Isaac has stated he won’t be in the next two Avengers movies. This is disappointing because Moon Knight was one of the few Disney+ Marvel series that really grabbed viewers’ attention, and it seems Marvel Studios doesn’t currently plan to continue the story.
The Council of Kangs Plots to Take Over the Multiverse
The movie Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania has a surprising post-credits scene. Even after Kang the Conqueror loses in the main part of the film, the scene reveals there are many different versions of him from across the multiverse – including past versions like Pharaoh Rama-Tut and the Scarlet Centurion, as well as the future version Immortus. It’s revealed there are thousands of these Kang variants, and they’re all uniting to fight the Avengers from our universe.
This scene clearly intended to lead into Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, where the Avengers were supposed to battle the Council of Kangs. However, with the decision to replace Kang with Doctor Doom and the subsequent changes to the next Avengers movie, it’s unlikely the storyline introduced in Quantumania’s post-credits scene will ever be explained. This leaves the Council of Kangs as a major unresolved plot point in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
