Netflix’s The Beast in Me Claims the Top Spot on Streaming Chart

A new psychological thriller starring Claire Danes and Matthew Rhys has quickly become the most popular show on Netflix. The limited series, released just yesterday, is already receiving rave reviews, with critics calling it both “excellent” and “genuinely suspenseful.”

Viewers are enjoying The Beast in Me, which is currently the most popular series on Netflix in the United States. It’s also topping the charts in several other countries, including Croatia, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. Since its release on Netflix on November 13th, the series has quickly become a hit with streaming audiences.

What Is The Beast in Me About?

Gabe Rotter, known for his work on The X-Files, created the psychological thriller The Beast in Me. The story follows Aggie Wiggs (Claire Danes), a successful author who retreats from public life after the tragic loss of her son. Her quiet life is disrupted when Nile Jarvis (Matthew Rhys), a prominent real estate developer, moves in next door, and Aggie finds herself increasingly intrigued by him.

People are intrigued by Nile, partly because his wife vanished and he was the main person investigators looked at. Aggie starts digging into Nile’s past to uncover what really happened, leading to a dangerous game of pursuit where the stakes are life and death.

Alongside the lead actors, The Beast in Me features a talented cast including Brittany Snow, Natalie Morales, Jonathan Banks, David Lyons, Tim Guinee, Hettienne Park, Deidre O’Connell, Aleyse Shannon, Will Brill, Kate Burton, Bill Irwin, Amir Arison, and Julie Ann Emery.

Rumors are circulating about a possible continuation of the show, and Howard Gordon, the showrunner and executive producer, agrees there’s more to the story. When asked about a sequel or new series, Gordon told TV Insider, “Yes, I think there probably is a story there.”

Critical Response to Netflix’s The Beast in Me

The Beast in Me has an 84% Tomatometer score with critics on Rotten Tomatoes, as well as a 73% Popcornmeter score with audiences. Jen Chaney of TV Guide says that “The Beast in Me happens to be excellent” and is “genuinely suspenseful.”

Judy Berman of the Times highlights Claire Danes’ performance in The Beast in Me as her best since Homeland. She describes the eight-episode murder mystery – which Danes leads – as ‘diabolically addictive’ and one of the most suspenseful shows of the year, praising both the casting and pacing.

While The Beast in Me boasts strong stories and characters inspired by real events, it truly shines in how those elements are brought to life. Despite a few predictable moments, the conversations feel more realistic and less like the overly dramatic or forced banter often found in TV thrillers.

Katie Doll describes the story as simple and straightforward, but acknowledges that a classic cat-and-mouse chase between a killer and the detective trying to catch them can still be enjoyable. She suggests, however, that adding some extra elements would make it even more compelling.

All eight episodes of The Beast in Me are now streaming on Netflix.
