A new trailer is out for the upcoming movie version of Wuthering Heights, directed by Emerald Fennell (who also directed Saltburn). The film stars Jacob Elordi and Margot Robbie as Heathcliff and Catherine. While the trailer has certainly generated buzz, the reaction hasn’t been overwhelmingly positive. It’s set to be released in 2026.
The trailer highlights the strong connection between the two main characters, a relationship their society doesn’t allow because of their different social classes. This connection is tragically broken when Heathcliff departs.
He eventually comes back, dressed in expensive clothes and sporting a new look, trying to show everyone – and especially Catherine – that he’s now successful and attractive. He then intentionally flirts with other women to make Catherine jealous.
What to Read Next
The film features many tender moments between the characters, alongside more intimate scenes. It’s visually striking, with highly stylized sets – think shiny red floors and stacks of bright green bottles. There’s also action, like horseback riding and street riots, and even a bizarre scene of Heathcliff licking a wall.
The movie features caption cards declaring Emily Brontë’s novel to be “the greatest love story of all time,” accompanied by a new song by Charli XCX written specifically for the film.

It looks impressive, but viewers are confused because it doesn’t seem to accurately reflect the original story.
Fans reacting to the trailer on YouTube have noticed that the actors don’t resemble the characters from the book, the beautiful settings don’t reflect the dark and gloomy atmosphere, and the trailer seems to be presenting it as a simple love story—which doesn’t capture the complex and unconventional nature of Wuthering Heights.
One fan cleverly described the movie as being ‘made by people who haven’t read Wuthering Heights for people who haven’t read Wuthering Heights.’ Another admitted they planned to watch it as if it were a completely new story, knowing they’d dislike it if they compared it to the book.
One viewer pointed out that beyond the title, character names, and perhaps the location, the movie doesn’t seem to have much in common with the original novel. They missed the dark, intense atmosphere and the volatile, damaging romance. They also felt the story focused on revenge, not love, and described both Heathcliff and Catherine as unlikeable characters.

A commenter noted that Wuthering Heights is often interpreted as a story about a forbidden romance between a man of lower social status and a wealthier white woman. They felt the recent film adaptation missed the mark by casting Jacob Elordi in the role, seemingly erasing that important dynamic.
Someone else commented that it was surprising to see the actors playing characters who are supposed to be between 17 and 21 years old, considering their ages in the original book.
One fan called it a heartbreaking story of two deeply flawed people who hurt each other while still trying to find love. They definitely didn’t think it was ‘the greatest love story ever told’.
The “greatest love story of all time” description sparked a lot of reactions online. People playfully disagreed, sharing comments like “I must have read a different book,” “let me brace myself before I say this,” and humorous questions like “Is anyone going to tell them?”

Despite some changes from the original story, many people believe this film will be enjoyable thanks to the actors and its impressive visual style.
One person commented that the show would have been amazing if it hadn’t been based on Wuthering Heights, while another praised its visuals, saying the sets and costumes were impressively chilling in a good way.
One fan commented that while the movie’s casting choices generally seem off, Jacob Elordi’s accent in the trailer’s first 30 seconds is amazing. Another person acknowledged the criticism but expressed strong excitement and a feeling they’ll enjoy the movie regardless.
The movie is described as “inspired by” the book, and the title is in quotes, suggesting it’s not a direct adaptation. We’ll have to wait a few months to see if the film takes the story in a more modern or experimental direction, beyond what’s been shown in the trailer.
Wuthering Heights will be released in cinemas on 14 February.
