John Hurt and Anthony Head’s hit drama that had fans “hooked” gets new UK streaming home

The fantasy series Merlin, featuring Colin Morgan (known from Humans), Anthony Head (Ted Lasso), Richard Wilson (One Foot in the Grave), and the late John Hurt, is now available on another streaming service in the UK.

The first season, originally broadcast on BBC One in 2008 after Doctor Who helped revive Saturday nights as a popular time for family viewing, is now available on Prime Video.

Currently, only Season 1 is included with that subscription. While you can purchase Season 4 on Prime Video, Seasons 2, 3, and 5 aren’t available for streaming on Amazon.

However, the show is available to stream in full via BBC iPlayer, Disney+ and ITVX Premium.

If you subscribe to Prime Video and enjoy fantasy shows, you can rewatch 13 episodes from the late 2000s. Hopefully, Prime Video will add even more episodes in the future.

If you’re new to this take on the Arthurian legend, be aware that it portrays Merlin as a young man discovering his magical abilities, instead of the traditional older, bearded wizard.

He relocates to Camelot and quickly becomes friends with Arthur, who is a young prince just beginning his reign. However, he must keep his magical abilities secret because Arthur’s father, Uther, has forbidden the use of magic.

By acting this way, Uther has created enemies who want to harm or get revenge on him, forcing Merlin to protect a man who would ultimately betray him.

Viewers on IMDb give the show a strong 7.9 out of 10. While some find it a little over-the-top or cheesy, particularly in the beginning, most agree that its genuine heart makes it surprisingly charming and ultimately very binge-worthy.

One viewer admitted the show got off to a shaky start, with some moments feeling a bit over-the-top, and the weekly villains occasionally being ridiculous. However, they noted that season two was a significant improvement, and by season three, the show really found its footing and consistently delivered. Another fan praised the show’s captivating blend of mystery, thrills, magic, and romance, saying it kept them completely engrossed.

Despite being poorly made with really bad special effects and writing, the story still managed to grab my attention more than Game of Thrones ever did, according to one viewer.

“I can’t quite explain it, but it just feels like coming home,” said one fan. Another added that the actors clearly enjoyed themselves so much that it kept them hooked.

You can watch the first season of Merlin on Prime Video. If you want to watch all the seasons, they’re available on BBC iPlayer, Disney+, and ITVX Premium.

The latest issue of Living Legends is now available! You can find Ariana & Witches at newsstands and online for only £8.99.
