Zachery Ty Bryan, known for his role on Home Improvement, suggested his struggles adjusting from being a child star to an adult with adult responsibilities contributed to his recent arrest related to domestic violence.
Bryan, best known for his role as Brad Taylor on the ABC sitcom that aired from 1991 to 1999, has spoken about the lasting negative effects of childhood fame. He says it caused emotional scars that have contributed to legal troubles he’s faced as an adult, more than twenty years later.
Following a court’s decision to grant his ex-girlfriend a five-year restraining order, Bryan, age 44, gave an interview to TMZ on Tuesday about his recent legal issues.
According to court documents obtained by the media, Bryan’s former girlfriend claims he physically assaulted her on July 3rd.
According to legal documents reported by the outlet, Bryan punched his ex-girlfriend after she playfully touched his nipple.
The woman testified in court that the actor threatened her during their three-month relationship, reportedly saying, ‘Shut up or I’ll shut you up.’ However, no criminal charges have been filed against him regarding this incident.

The actor, originally from Aurora, Colorado, explained to TMZ that becoming famous at age nine created pressures he wasn’t ready for, though he acknowledges that doesn’t excuse his later actions.
Following his recent arrest, Bryan stated he’s committed to personal growth and working on himself to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Bryan stated he understands that domestic violence is never okay. He expressed deep regret for his past mistakes, explaining they were caused by immaturity resulting from a difficult upbringing.
Bryan shared that he’s dealt with the difficult consequences of becoming famous young, struggling with addiction, and making bad choices. These issues have caused pain to people he loves and have resulted in multiple run-ins with the law, including driving under the influence and incidents of domestic disturbance.
Bryan stated that the recent events – including the restraining order and the serious claims made – have been a difficult and sobering experience.
As someone who often talks about building a fulfilling life, I’ve been following the recent news surrounding the actor from ‘The Guardians of Justice.’ He recently shared with me how deeply upsetting it is to have his parenting skills questioned because of his legal troubles. It’s a reminder that everyone deserves compassion, and that public judgment can have a real impact on families.
Bryan admitted that being called a ‘bad dad’ really hurt, explaining that his children mean everything to him and he’s aware he hasn’t always lived up to their expectations.
Bryan, known for his role as Clay in the 2006 film The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, is seeking help through therapy, including programs for drug rehabilitation and managing anger.

Bryan was previously arrested in connection with domestic violence two times.
In October 2020, Bryan was arrested in Eugene, Oregon, following an incident with his partner. He later pleaded guilty to menacing and simple assault.
Bryan was arrested in Horry County, South Carolina, in January for allegedly assaulting a woman. The case is still under investigation.
Bryan starred alongside Tim Allen, Patricia Richardson, Jonathan Taylor Thomas, and Taran Noah Smith in 203 episodes of the show Home Improvement.
