Director David Michôd (known for The King and Animal Kingdom) and actress Katy O’Brian (The Mandalorian, Mission: Impossible) teamed up to tell the incredible true story of boxer Christy Martin. The film is a powerful and honest portrayal of her fight for survival, finding herself, and overcoming huge obstacles.
Michôd and O’Brian explain what sets Christy’s story apart from other boxing movies. O’Brian talks about the difficulty of playing Lisa Holewyne, a real-life figure, and how she worked to capture her personality, voice, and emotional strength. Michôd describes how he wanted the film to start like a traditional underdog sports story, but ultimately become a raw, human, and surprisingly emotional experience.
They also share their experiences working with Christy Martin herself and why the movie connects with viewers who have faced trauma and are striving to be resilient.
