Dave Bautista Found A Career-First Experience In His New Action Movie

Dave Bautista says his new action movie is a first for him. The film, directed by Michael Dowse, centers on two undercover DEA agents who discover their teenage kids are using their skills to rob a dangerous drug cartel.

Dave Bautista told ScreenRant that the movie Trap House is particularly meaningful to him because he’s been involved since the project started. He explained that the film originally had a very different direction, and he played a significant role in developing it into its final form.

I think this is the first movie I’ve been involved with from the very beginning, all the way to the end of filming. It started with an idea from a friend, Brent Wagner, who asked if I thought it would work as a movie. The initial concept was quite different from the final film – it revolved around kids stealing from their own parents.

I initially expressed my reservations about the premise – the idea of children stealing from the government and police didn’t sit right with me. But then I suggested a different approach, a twist on the concept. The person I was talking to liked that idea a lot. I’d recently collaborated with a producer named Mark Goldberg on a movie called Final Score, and we were eager to find a new project. So, I presented this idea to him, and he immediately agreed we should find a writer and develop it. That’s how the project got its start.

I’m really excited about Trap House, but it sounds like getting the movie made has been tough just because of scheduling. Bautista’s been incredibly busy lately with huge projects like Dune: Part Two (which came out in 2024), and he’s also been working on The Killer’s Game (2024) and In the Lost Lands (coming in 2025). It’s great to see him so in demand, but it definitely makes fitting everything in a challenge!

This project was a long time in the making, mainly because of my work schedule. After I first had the idea, my career took off, and we spent two years searching for a time when I could film it. We finally found a short window of a few months, but I only had three weeks available, so the production team had to work very efficiently to fit everything in.

With the film completed and scheduled for release on November 14th, Dave Bautista has reached a significant point in his career. He explains that this is the first movie he’s produced, having guided the entire project from its beginnings through to completion.

I was especially proud to fully produce this film – from the initial concept and hiring a writer, to being involved during filming. It was a long-held goal of mine. As an actor, you can often be excluded from the creative side, which I didn’t enjoy. I wanted to avoid that situation, so I began actively seeking and developing projects where I could be a producer and ensure my creative input.

The film Trap House boasts a strong supporting cast alongside Dave Bautista, featuring well-known actors like Sophia Lillis (from Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves), Bobby Cannavale (Ant-Man), Tony Dalton (Better Call Saul), Jack Champion (Avatar: The Way of Water), and Kate del Castillo (The Cleaning Lady).

2025 has been a packed year for Dave Bautista. He appeared in the spring release In the Lost Lands and took a leading role in August’s Afterburn. He also made a cameo in The Naked Gun alongside Liam Neeson. While In the Lost Lands and Afterburn received generally unfavorable reviews, Trap House could be his best-received film of the year.

With Trap House, Dave Bautista wraps up his film projects for this year, but he has a lot coming up next. He’s scheduled to appear in The Wrecking Crew and The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender, and will also star in Road House 2 on Prime Video alongside Jake Gyllenhaal, as well as the reboot of Highlander with Henry Cavill.

Reviews for “Trap House” aren’t available yet, but the movie promises to be a thrilling addition to Dave Bautista’s already diverse and strong body of work. It seems like a particularly important project for Bautista, as he’s involved both in front of and behind the camera.
