NBCUniversal is starting a new cable channel on Monday that will broadcast live sporting events, and some of these events are currently only available on their streaming service, Peacock.
NBC Sports Network will now be available on both YouTube TV and Xfinity, Comcast’s cable service, the company revealed on Thursday. They anticipate reaching agreements with other cable and streaming providers soon.
NBC is launching a new channel to make its sports content more appealing to advertisers. Currently, many advertisers hesitate to invest in NBC’s Peacock streaming service because it only reaches 41 million subscribers. Importantly, there’s very little overlap between Peacock subscribers and the 60 million households that still subscribe to traditional cable or satellite TV, meaning a new channel expands NBC’s potential audience significantly.
Live sports are a major reason people continue to subscribe to cable and satellite TV. NBCUniversal leaders think this channel will help companies like Comcast keep their customers from canceling their subscriptions.

Viewers brace for changes as NBA games move to NBC and Amazon Prime Video.
This new channel will now show Monday night NBA games that used to be available only on Peacock. It will also be the place to watch Gold Zone – the daily Olympic highlights show hosted by Scott Hanson – which was previously exclusive to Peacock during last summer’s games. During the February Winter Olympics, it will be the home of Gold Zone.
Although it hasn’t been made public yet, NBCUniversal is likely to broadcast a selection of Major League Baseball games, with some airing on the NBC Sports Network.
The channel will also feature a variety of other sports from NBC, including WNBA games, college basketball from the Big Ten, Big East, and Big 12 conferences, select golf tournaments, Premier League soccer, and the lead-up races to the Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks.
NBCUniversal used to own a cable sports channel, but it closed it down in 2021 when it lost the rights to broadcast NHL games. However, the company has recently invested heavily in live sports, recognizing its strong attraction for advertisers.
In 2024, the company entered an 11-year deal to be a major media rights partner with the NBA.
The channel will feature Peacock’s sports talk programs, such as “The Dan Patrick Show,” “The Dan Le Batard Show,” and “Fantasy Football Happy Hour with Matthew Berry.”
