The popular cartoon character SpongeBob SquarePants is getting a new movie called The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants, which will hit theaters on December 19th.
A new SpongeBob movie is coming out later this year! In it, SpongeBob tries to impress Mr. Krabs by joining The Flying Dutchman on a wild adventure to the very bottom of the ocean.
Tom Kenny is returning as the voice of SpongeBob, and he’ll be joined by Mark Hamill (as The Flying Dutchman), George Lopez, Regina Hall, and Clancy Brown. Rapper Ice Spice is also joining the cast as a new character.
The new movie, Search for SquarePants, promises to be a really fun addition to the series. It’s directed by Derek Drymon, who has worked on shows and films like CatDog, Kung Fu Panda 2, and Hotel Transylvania 4: Transformania. The writing team includes Pam Brady (known for South Park and Team America), Matt Lieberman (Free Guy, Scoob!), and Marc Ceccarelli (Uncle Grandpa, Phineas and Ferb).
SpongeBob SquarePants is Nickelodeon’s most enduring show, with new episodes airing since 1999. The popular franchise includes several movies and spin-off series, such as The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, which earned over $311 million in theaters. Currently, Paramount is working on three additional spin-off movies.
The new movie, Search for SquarePants, is the fourth installment in the SpongeBob series, and critics are already calling it the funniest one in over two decades. The franchise began with The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie in 2004, which earned over $141 million globally and paved the way for several more films.
The show has aired for 16 seasons with a total of 348 episodes, and has received more than 60 awards since it began.
The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants will be released in theaters on December 19.
