Fans have been eagerly awaiting Season 5 of Stranger Things, but the wait pales in comparison to how long it’s taking to release Grand Theft Auto VI. Stranger Things Season 5 is scheduled to premiere in November 2025, three years after the last season aired. Some fans have playfully noted that it’s taken nine years to produce five seasons of the show—a timeframe long enough for other series to start and finish. However, just recently, Grand Theft Auto VI, which has already been delayed for a significant period, experienced another setback.
Gaten Matarazzo, known for his role as Dustin in Stranger Things, jokingly pointed out the timing of the Grand Theft Auto VI delay. He told IGN that Stranger Things managed to complete all five seasons before GTA 6 will finally be released. Stranger Things premiered three years after Grand Theft Auto V came out in 2013, and will finish airing just before Grand Theft Auto VI arrives in November 2026.
The Long, Complicated Wait for ‘GTA VI’

Rockstar
Gamers have been eagerly awaiting Grand Theft Auto VI, the next installment in the hugely popular Grand Theft Auto series, which last saw a new release with Grand Theft Auto V in 2013. Though rumors about a sixth game had been circulating for years, it was officially announced in 2022 with an initial release date of May 26, 2026. Some predicted the game’s launch could affect movie ticket sales, potentially drawing players away from theaters and impacting the box office performance of The Mandalorian & Grogu, scheduled for release on May 22, 2026. However, Rockstar, the publisher of Grand Theft Auto VI, announced a delay on November 6, 2025, pushing the game’s release to November 19, 2026.
The delay of Grand Theft Auto VI came after Rockstar Games fired 34 employees – 31 from Rockstar North and 3 from Rockstar Toronto – for sharing confidential information. The Independent Workers’ of Great Britain union claims these firings were actually an attempt to prevent employees from forming a union, alleging the dismissed workers were organizing on Discord. Protests were held outside Rockstar North in Edinburgh on October 31st, 2025, and again outside Take-Two’s London office on November 6th, the day the game’s delay was announced. While the firings weren’t directly responsible for the delay, they’ve hurt employee morale and many gamers suspect Rockstar of anti-union practices, leading to concerns the company will continue to miss deadlines.
Both Stranger Things and Grand Theft Auto VI are scheduled to launch during the busy holiday season – Stranger Things in 2025 and GTA VI in 2026. Stranger Things Season 5 will roll out in stages, starting the day before Thanksgiving, continuing on Christmas Day, and concluding on New Year’s Day. Grand Theft Auto VI is planned for release just before Black Friday, and its launch could potentially impact the box office numbers for The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, which comes out the very next day. Both titles face huge expectations from fans who have been waiting for years – and in GTA VI’s case, over a decade.
