Even though we all know and love superhero stories, they don’t always work well as video games. Often, that’s because game developers prioritize profit over quality. Thankfully, in recent years, players have started getting truly great superhero games. Here’s a list of our favorites.
What are the best superhero video games as of 2025?
As a huge cinema and gaming fan, I’ve seen a lot of superhero games come out since the year 2000 – seriously, thousands! And honestly, most of them aren’t very good. But there are definitely a few real gems that stand out. Just so you know, I’m not ranking these – I’m just pointing out the ones I think are truly great.
Batman: Arkham City (2011)
The Batman: Arkham series consistently ranks as one of the best in gaming, and for good reason. While opinions differ on the best installment – with Arkham Asylum, Arkham City, and Arkham Knight all being strong contenders, we favor Arkham City – they’re all exceptional games. Developed by Rocksteady Studios, Arkham City continues the story after Arkham Asylum, with the former warden now serving as Gotham City’s mayor. Beyond its compelling narrative, the game is praised for its incredible gameplay. Combat feels fluid and rewarding, allowing you to seamlessly link attacks and counter opponents, truly embodying the Dark Knight. And the stealth sections are consistently engaging, making sneaking through the shadows and planning takedowns a lot of fun.
The game features many optional missions that encourage exploration, and the city itself feels dynamic and full of hidden discoveries. The voice acting is also particularly well done. Even though it came out in 2011, it’s still a great experience for anyone who hasn’t played it yet.
Injustice 2 (2017)
If you prefer traditional heroes, this game might not be for you – it leans heavily into the antiheroic. However, if you enjoy action-packed fighting in video games, Injustice 2 delivers. The story is dark and follows a similar path to some of the grittier comic books, starting with a shocking event: the Joker manipulates Superman into accidentally killing Lois Lane and destroying a city. This leads Batman to secretly fight back against his former ally, setting up an all-out battle between a huge roster of characters – a fantastic 28 of them, in fact!
Injustice 2’s story is a significant improvement over the first game – and that’s important to note if you weren’t thrilled with the original’s tone. While it’s still over-the-top, the writing is much better, making the high stakes feel believable and the game far more enjoyable. For fighting game fans, the combat is both rewarding and highly replayable.
Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy (2021)
Guardians of the Galaxy is a standout single-player game from the last ten years, offering a fresh story that doesn’t retread familiar movie ground. Beyond the exciting combat, the game truly shines in how well its story and action blend together. It’s a fantastic example of narrative-driven action, showcasing the talent of Eidos-Montreal. Though filled with over-the-top moments and explosive set-pieces, the game’s core is its compelling characters and heartfelt story.
You take on the role of Star-Lord, the unpredictable leader of a mismatched team of galactic rebels – a chaotic bunch packed into one crew. Just like in the movies, the game features a fantastic 80s soundtrack that perfectly captures the lighthearted and funny spirit of every witty exchange.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 (2023)
If you want an action-packed game with a compelling story, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is a great choice. Developed by Insomniac Games and Sony Entertainment, it lets you play as both Peter Parker and Miles Morales – you might recognize Miles from the movie Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse – as they team up to face the dangerous threat of Venom.
This game moves at a breakneck pace, smoothly integrating action into the story. From the very beginning, even when you’re learning the controls and discovering new abilities, everything feels incredibly fast-paced – and it’s a good thing! Beyond the exciting combat and captivating story, the game deserves praise for its beautiful and detailed recreation of New York City.
Dispatch (2025)
It’s hard to describe just how visually impressive Dispatch is. The game feels like watching a movie – you might not believe it’s actually interactive if you only saw a gameplay video! Developed by AdHoc Studio, Dispatch is a darkly humorous superhero game inspired by the choice-based storytelling of games like those from Telltale. However, it improves on that formula with a quicker pace and smoother conversations – dialogue flows naturally without awkward pauses while you make decisions.
In this game, you play as Robert Roberson, known as Mecha Man. After his suit is damaged in battle, Robert must work as a 911 dispatcher for superheroes. He juggles a lot – helping former villains get back on their feet, managing the demands of his job, navigating office politics, and trying to rebuild his suit so he can finally face off against his arch-enemy.
How we picked the best Superhero video games
We considered what fans and critics thought, but we mainly focused on how fun the games were to play, how good the stories were, and whether you’d want to play them again. Other games we seriously considered including were Control, which is great if you like a bit of the supernatural, and Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero.
