Lesley Manville’s crime thriller, Winter of the Crow, received positive reviews after its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, and is now closer to being released in the UK.
The film is inspired by a short story, Professor Andrews Goes to Warsaw, written by Nobel laureate Olga Tokarczuk, and features Manville playing a version of the main character whose gender has been changed.
In 1981, when martial law was declared in Poland, the Professor found herself stranded in Warsaw as the city descended into turmoil.

After photographing a student’s murder by secret police, she finds herself on the run. Her only potential savior seems to be the British ambassador, but she’s unsure if he’ll help her or hand her over as a fugitive.
Signature Entertainment will be releasing the film in the UK. Although a specific date hasn’t been announced, it’s expected to happen soon.

Signature’s Chief Content Officer, Elizabeth Williams, praised Winter of the Crow as a gripping and intense thriller, highlighting Kasia Adamik’s skillful direction and a standout performance by British acting icon Lesley Manville, according to Screen Daily.
“We love films like this and are excited to release it in 2026.”
Okay, so everyone seems to be saying the same thing about the lead actor, Manville. Variety put it really well – they said he carries the whole movie with this really intense, determined vibe. It’s cool to see him as the central figure, honestly. It’s a really strong performance, and it totally works.

Though the story isn’t particularly original, the film’s fast pace, realistic action—similar to The Bourne Identity—and a strong performance by Manville should attract a wide audience, according to Screen International. The Guardian praised Manville as a captivating lead in a generally well-made and occasionally thrilling story.
IndieWire praised the film’s technical aspects, highlighting Tomasz Naumiuk’s cinematography as richly detailed, capable of conveying both the coldness of the film’s interiors and the bleakness of Warsaw’s nighttime streets. They also commended Aleksandra Kierzkowska’s production design, noting its ability to feel both empty and realistically inhabited.
Winter of the Crow does not currently have a release date.
