M. Might Shayamalan’s Split is Leaving HBO Max

Before becoming Princess Peach in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Anya Taylor-Joy appeared with James McAvoy in the 2016 thriller Split. That film, a sequel to Unbreakable, grossed over $270 million worldwide almost a decade ago.

If you want to watch the movie Split on HBO Max, you’ll need to do so by November 30th, as it’s being removed from the streaming service on that date. Split is a suspenseful psychological thriller about Kevin (played by James McAvoy), a man with 23 different personalities, who kidnaps and holds several people, including Casey Cooke (played by Anya Taylor-Joy), captive in a secret underground location.

The film received a 79% rating from both critics and audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, and is known for how it depicts dissociative identity disorder. After it became available on Netflix, the hashtag #GetSplitOffNetflix started trending as many viewers expressed concerns about the movie, specifically the character of ‘The Beast,’ Kevin’s 24th personality. Some viewers countered these complaints by pointing out the film includes supernatural elements, suggesting criticism wasn’t warranted.

A Super Mario Sequel Film is Coming

Even though the movie Split is being removed from HBO Max, fans of Anya Taylor-Joy have something to look forward to! She’ll be reprising her voice acting role in a new animated film coming out on April 3, 2026. The sequel, from Illumination and Nintendo, also features Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek.

Julianne Hough has joined the cast of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and will play Rosalina. This news was revealed on November 12th during a Nintendo Direct presentation. Benny Safdie will also be joining the movie, voicing Bowser Jr. The first Super Mario Bros. movie was a huge financial success, earning over $1.3 billion globally, even though critics gave it a mixed score of 59% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, fans of the long-running video game series really enjoyed it, giving the film a very high audience score of 95% on Rotten Tomatoes based on over 10,000 reviews.

For now, fans can catch Taylor-Joy in Split until the film leaves HBO Max on Nov. 30.
