Fantastic Four’s Sue Storm Hates This Beloved Spider-Man Character

Look, sometimes characters just clash, and there doesn’t always need to be a big villain involved. I was genuinely surprised to learn, in Fantastic Four #5, that Sue Storm – usually a pretty friendly face in the Marvel Universe – holds a serious grudge against a well-known friend of Spider-Man. Writer Ryan North and artist Humberto Ramos really dig into the reasons why in this issue, and it’s a fascinating, unexpected dynamic they explore.

The Fantastic Four – minus Invisible Woman – head off on a fishing trip to the Negative Zone for some time away. But Sue Storm’s plans for a peaceful weekend are ruined when the police show up, bringing with them someone Sue really dislikes: Felicia Hardy, also known as Black Cat.

Felicia claims she was wrongly accused of murder after her bank manager was found dead in the vault while she was inside. Sue is doubtful, but decides to look into it because of Felicia’s connection to Peter Parker. However, Sue quickly determines Felicia is innocent, pointing out that the actual thief was far more careless and unprofessional than Black Cat would ever be, especially since valuables were also stolen during the crime.

Why Fantastic Four’s Sue Storm can’t stand Black Cat

During the investigation, Alicia Masters, Ben Grimm’s wife, wondered why Sue Storm didn’t get along with Black Cat. It would be easy to assume it was because Black Cat had once tried to rob the Fantastic Four, or perhaps because Sue, being an archaeologist, dislikes thieves who steal historical artifacts. But the real reason was much more straightforward.

Sue feels her problems with Black Cat stem from Felicia Hardy’s fundamentally selfish nature. Everything Sue knows suggests Felicia is greedy and doesn’t care about others, so she doesn’t believe it’s worth being friendly, even if Felicia is trying to change her ways.

Considering Sue’s history – she was a hardworking student who independently raised her brother – it’s understandable why someone like Felicia, who relied on theft to get by, would bother her. However, even though Sue dislikes Black Cat, she won’t allow those feelings to lead to Felicia being wrongly imprisoned.

Fantastic Four #5 is now available at comic shops everywhere.
