Edgar Wright, the director of films like Baby Driver and Shaun of the Dead, has revealed the true reason behind his departure from the Ant-Man project.
Edgar Wright had been developing an Ant-Man movie for Marvel Studios for several years. However, in May 2014, he left the project because of disagreements about the film’s direction. Wright later directed Baby Driver, and Peyton Reed ultimately directed the 2015 Ant-Man movie starring Paul Rudd.
What did Edgar Wright say about Ant-Man?
During a Reddit Q&A, Wright was asked to share the true reason he departed the Ant-Man project and to describe how his original vision for the film would have been different from what audiences ultimately saw.
Wright explained that he and Joe Cornish had finished the script well before Marvel’s massive success, even before the first Iron Man movie. However, by 2014, Marvel had a distinct style and established continuity that didn’t align with the unique, unconventional heist movie they’d created. Recognizing that his original vision was being lost, Wright decided to step away and let someone else take over. He hasn’t watched the final film, but remains confident in his decision to leave the project.
Following the success of Baby Driver, Edgar Wright directed two more projects: the 2021 documentary The Sparks Brothers and the film Last Night in Soho, which also came out in 2021.
This weekend, director Wright is releasing The Running Man, a new action thriller in US cinemas. The film is based on the 1982 Stephen King novel of the same name, which was also made into a movie in 1987 starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. The new version features Glen Powell, Josh Brolin, Colman Domingo, William H. Macy, and other talented actors.
