In his new Netflix documentary, Being Eddie, Eddie Murphy shared that his ten children are the most important thing in his life and the focus of everything he does as a father.
The 64-year-old comedian admitted he used to be very self-centered before having children, even pulling all-nighters, but says he’s completely changed his ways since becoming a parent.
Eddie recently went through a difficult and public dispute with his former partner, Mel B, regarding their 18-year-old transgender son, Angel. He initially questioned his paternity, which caused a long period of distance between them, but they have since rebuilt their relationship.
In his new documentary, Eddie explained that having children completely changed his perspective. He said, ‘Before kids, life revolves around you, but once they arrive, everything is about them.’
I used to have really erratic sleep patterns, sometimes staying awake for two days straight. But after I met my wife, Paige Butcher, I started following her routine, and now we typically watch a couple of episodes of Seinfeld before going to bed.
Eddie Murphy has ten children: Eric (35) with Paulette McNeely, Bria (35), Myles (32), Shayne (30), Zola (25), and Bella (23) with Nicole Murphy, Christian (34) with Tamara Hood, and Izzy (9) and Max (6) with his current wife, Paige.

I was so touched to hear earlier this year that things have really turned around for that actor and Spice Girl! Apparently, despite a rocky past, they’ve built a wonderful co-parenting relationship. What’s even more amazing is learning about their son – he’s now living authentically as a trans man, and it’s so inspiring to see the support they give him.
Mel, age 50, shared with US Weekly that Angel and Eddie enjoy spending time together, even going on vacations. She also praised Eddie as a dedicated father to his ten children.
It was difficult to build a healthy relationship with Eddie while I was still in my abusive marriage to Stephen Belafonte. He has denied the allegations of abuse.
Melanie Brown, known as Scary Spice, recently married Rory McPhee and shared that she’s gradually learned to co-parent with Eddie Murphy. She also noted that their friendship has become even stronger as their son has gotten older.
Mel raved about Angel, explaining that he fully immersed himself in Japanese culture during a trip last year with his girlfriend. Angel is fluent in Japanese and has a clear vision for his future goals and direction.
Mel and Eddie first met in 2006 at a large party Eddie hosted at his Beverly Hills home. Mel has said Eddie intentionally threw the party hoping to meet her. She described feeling an instant connection, saying she was overwhelmed when she saw him looking at her, and felt like she’d found her soulmate.
The couple surprised everyone with their relationship, but it didn’t last very long. Soon after, the singer, who already had a 26-year-old daughter named Phoenix with her former partner Jimmy Gulzar, revealed she was expecting a child.
Mel explained that their relationship began to fall apart when she became pregnant. She moved to Leeds, hoping Eddie would try to reconcile with her. However, during a TV interview, Eddie publicly expressed doubts about whether he was the baby’s father and suggested a paternity test was necessary.

In a 2019 interview with Piers Morgan, Mel revealed that Eddie still regrets his past comments about their child. She explained they had actually planned the pregnancy together, were deeply in love at the time, and their relationship unfortunately ended very badly.
She described their connection as uniquely special, something she hadn’t experienced with anyone else. While she’d believed she’d found it before, those relationships hadn’t been genuine. She felt his love was completely pure and that he was, and always will be, the love of her life. He taught her what real love feels like, and she deeply admires and respects him for that.
As a lifestyle expert, I’ve followed this story for years, and in her 2018 memoir, the singer really opened up about her past relationship. She clarified that it was much deeper and lasted significantly longer than people realize. She also revealed something pretty powerful: she was the one who pushed for a DNA test to establish paternity, ultimately leading to him acknowledging their child. It was a really brave thing for her to share, and it painted a much fuller picture of what happened.
She explained that Eddie had a huge impact on her life, and their connection was so strong that they both got tattoos of each other’s signatures on their thighs at a tattoo shop in Hollywood.
Mel recalled that the actor often watched classic Elvis movies and comedies like Blazing Saddles. He also frequently shared stories about growing up in New York, including how he and his brother Charlie spent some time in foster care while their mother was sick.
‘He was fascinating to me. He’d had a life I couldn’t imagine,’ wrote Mel.
