On Wednesday, Channel Nine confirmed that Amber Sherlock was leaving the network in a surprising announcement. During the news broadcast, Georgie Gardner unexpectedly stepped away from the script to give a sincere farewell to her former coworker.
Gardner shared these remarks towards the end of the 9News broadcast, offering best wishes to Sherlock and publicly acknowledging a long-rumored development within Nine.
Gardner started by saying, “Before we finish up for the night, we want to say goodbye to our coworker, Amber Sherlock.”
She added that Amber has been a reliable part of the news team for several years, delivering our weather forecasts for Nine News each day.
‘I’d like to thank Amber for her contribution, and we wish her and her family all the very best.’
Concerns about Sherlock’s job at Channel Nine arose after he unexpectedly missed Monday’s show, coinciding with recent layoffs at the network.

Viewers noticed a change on 9News when longtime anchor and weather presenter, known for a recent disagreement about a white jacket, was absent from her usual spot. Reporter Sophie Walsh, 40, filled in, but the network didn’t explain why the original presenter was missing.
Newsroom insiders insisted at that time she was ‘gone’.
Sherlock, age 49, has lost his job at Nine as part of a recent and significant series of layoffs. He had worked at the network since 2007.
A source at Nine told Daily Mail on Monday that Sherlock’s high salary might have been a reason for the network’s decision to remove her from her popular weather presenting job.
‘She’s paid loads of dough so it makes sense,’ the source explained.
‘She was meant to do the afternoon weather but then Soph (Sophie Walsh) suddenly filled in.’
Nine did not deny that Sherlock was out of a job when approached by Daily Mail on Monday.
The company isn’t commenting on whether any specific people are affected by the job cuts, as they reduce their workforce by 50 positions.

Nine did, however, confirm a restructure was underway in order to drive ‘commercial growth’.
The company expected to cut jobs in newsrooms across the country, including its Queensland bureaus.
Nine has begun discussions with some employees whose jobs are affected by changes to how its streaming and broadcast operations will work, a Nine representative stated.
The way we work has been updated to better connect the teams at Stan, Channel 9, and 9Now. This change aims to streamline efforts, encourage more teamwork, and help Nine grow its business, especially given the current difficulties in the advertising industry.
Okay, so there’s been some restructuring happening at the network. While around 50 positions are being eliminated, the good news is we don’t anticipate losing that many people overall. That’s because we’re also creating some exciting new roles, and we’re actively working to move existing team members into positions where their skills can really shine. It’s about evolving and ensuring we have the right people in the right places.
There are also open jobs that won’t be replaced, and some temporary contracts are ending without being extended.
Nine has been reducing its workforce since last year as part of a previously announced plan to save $30 million.
That initiative saw 200 job cuts announced in June 2024.

Nine Entertainment CEO Mike Sneesby said last year that the recent job cuts are necessary for the company to move forward with a major restructuring, which will allow them to focus more on growing their streaming services.
As a long-time supporter of Nine, I understand that to keep growing and exploring new digital possibilities, the company needs to be smart about managing its expenses, especially through changing times. That’s what Sneesby explained – it’s about making sure we can continue investing in the future while being financially responsible.
In 2017, Sherlock gained international attention after a public disagreement with reporter Julie Snook, which became known as ‘jacketgate’.
The leaked video revealed she insisted Julie wear a jacket to avoid them both appearing in white on camera.
Amber asked her producer to have Julie put on a jacket. She explained that everyone was wearing white and she’d already reminded Julie before they started filming. She repeated directly to Julie, ‘You need to put a jacket on.’
Snook defended herself, insisting she had not had time to change out of her outfit.
But Sherlock refused to back down, replying: ‘Come on I told you two hours ago.’
Her colleague at 9 News said sorry, explaining she’d been very busy and hadn’t had a chance to change her outfit.

Honestly, dealing with a stressed-out Sherlock was…intense. He completely brushed off my apology and just kept insisting I change my outfit before we started the broadcast. It was all about getting everything just right for him, and there was zero room for discussion in that moment!
Sherlock explained the reason she told her co-host to get a jacket during the private moment that was accidentally recorded and shared.
The experienced reporter told The Daily Telegraph she might have overreacted when she got upset with Julie for wearing the same color clothes. She explained her behavior by saying she was stressed, tired, and the weather was hot.
She didn’t fully grasp how serious things were until people started sharing their thoughts on the radio and even Jimmy Kimmel, the late-night host, commented on it.
She readily admitted she didn’t handle the situation well, explaining she was likely stressed and tired, and perhaps overreacted. She acknowledged there were more constructive ways she could have responded.
The journalist also said the fast-paced newsroom didn’t allow the presenters time to discuss things properly.
Julie and I were both okay with how things went. Everyone’s entitled to their opinion, but when you actually watch the footage, I think people blew the situation way out of proportion, she said.
Amber didn’t directly apologize to Julie for what happened during the interview, but she did share sincere explanations about how she was thinking at the time.

‘I think I’m a kind, generous person. I am a mum, I have a family. And I was devastated.
‘I am only human at the end of the day, and I think people forget that,’ she added.
Following the incident, the media heavily criticized the experienced reporter. For example, news.com.au called Amber Sherlock ‘an international laughing stock’.
Even though many people asked for Amber to be fired, Channel Nine continued to support her and she remained with the network.
Sherlock started her journalism career at Sydney’s Seven Network. She initially focused on finance, working at Seven, Channel Ten, and Sky News.
She started working at Nine in 2007, initially presenting business news on the Today show. By 2009, she had become the weekend news presenter for the breakfast program.
Since 2011, Sherlock had worked as both a news anchor and weather presenter at Nine.
