A recent report suggests when the Donkey Kong movie will likely be released, indicating Nintendo plans to create more films after the huge success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
The Donkey Kong movie to come out in less than three years
A user named MyTimeToShineHello posted on X (formerly Twitter) that a Donkey Kong movie is planned for release in 2028. This rumor gained traction after Video Game Chronicle found a copyright filing from July for a “Untitled Donkey Kong Project; Motion Picture.” The filing confirms Nintendo Studios and Universal Pictures are working together on the project, which has been discussed for a while.
If the movie stays on track for a 2028 release, fans won’t have to wait much longer to see Donkey Kong get his own film. The character, famously voiced by Seth Rogen, was a popular hit in the 2023 Super Mario Bros. Movie, which earned over $1 billion globally. Since then, people have been eager for a Donkey Kong spinoff, and the fact that it’s being made with Universal is somewhat unexpected considering the studios’ past disagreements.
In 1983, Universal Pictures sued Nintendo, claiming the popular arcade game Donkey Kong copied its King Kong trademark. The court disagreed, pointing out that Universal had previously stated King Kong was freely available for anyone to use, and that consumers wouldn’t mistake the two characters for each other.
The recent copyright filing makes it likely that the Donkey Kong movie is a different project than the next Mario film, currently believed to be called ‘Super Mario World’ and scheduled to come out on April 3, 2026. This has sparked discussion among fans, who think Nintendo might be building a larger cinematic universe where different characters have their own movies, all taking place in the same world.
