Director Shawn Levy recently shared some disheartening news about a potential Real Steel 2. While the original Real Steel, released in 2011, only earned $299 million in theaters, it’s since become a beloved film for many Hugh Jackman fans, and there’s been ongoing interest in revisiting that futuristic world.
Shawn Levy, who previously explored options like a TV series, now says another Real Steel project is unlikely. In a recent interview with Collider, he didn’t completely rule out a sequel or show, but made it clear he doesn’t expect the franchise to continue. Here’s what he had to say:
I have to give you credit, Frosty – you really don’t give up! I get the feeling you’ll still be asking me about Real Steel even when we’re both old, and I appreciate that. Right now, though, it’s unclear if it will actually happen, and honestly, I don’t think it’s very likely.
For over ten years, there’s been discussion about a potential sequel to Real Steel. Director Shawn Levy has repeatedly said he’d love to revisit that story, and the recent release of Deadpool & Wolverine has only increased the buzz. While promoting their Marvel film, Levy told ScreenRant that he and Hugh Jackman “always talk about Real Steel 2,” adding that fans keep the idea alive, which he appreciates.

In April 2024, Levy shared encouraging news about a potential Real Steel TV series, a project first reported by Variety two years prior. The initial report stated that a show set in the Real Steel universe was being developed for Disney+, with Levy as a producer. While no writer was assigned at the time, the project appears to have stalled since then.
With a production cost of around $110 million, the film earned $299 million worldwide, making it a profitable venture, though perhaps not the blockbuster Disney anticipated. The story of Hugh Jackman’s character, a former boxer trying to succeed in the world of robot boxing with an outdated robot, resonated with audiences.
You know, it’s funny – Real Steel didn’t exactly blow critics away when it came out, and audiences were just okay with it. But I was surprised to see it trending on Netflix in June 2024! It really shows the movie still resonates with people, even after all these years. Still, all that buzz wasn’t enough to get a sequel or a spin-off TV series made, which is a shame, I thought.
According to recent news from director Shawn Levy, a sequel to Real Steel or any related TV shows seem very unlikely. While he hasn’t ruled out the possibility entirely, fans hoping to see Hugh Jackman return as Charlie Kenton alongside Anthony Mackie, Evangeline Lilly, Dakota Goyo, and Kevin Durand probably shouldn’t expect it.
