Caroline Flack, the host of Love Island, died by suicide at the age of 40. This happened just two months after she was arrested and charged with assault following a disagreement with her boyfriend, Lewis Burton.
When Flack was arrested, her story dominated the tabloids, and the public was captivated by what became one of the most sensational celebrity trials ever seen.

Christine, the mother of the missing woman, has tirelessly worked to uncover the truth about what happened. She’s been looking into whether authorities, like the police and prosecutors, treated her daughter fairly, or if her celebrity status led to unfair treatment and negative portrayal.
The film Search For The Truth chronicles Christine’s investigation, revealing troubling evidence that challenges previously accepted beliefs and corrects misinformation reported as fact.
For the first time, Caroline Flack is able to tell her side of the story. Recently revealed WhatsApp messages and voice notes from her final weeks provide a unique and heartbreaking look into her declining mental health, as she faced public criticism, lost her job, and struggled with the breakdown of her personal life.
Here are the five moments that shocked us the most.
The CPS dropped Flack’s case – but one detective wouldn’t let it lie
Prosecutors didn’t plan to charge Caroline Flack when she was arrested. Lewis didn’t want to press charges because his injuries were minor – he didn’t even need to see a doctor – and the case wasn’t considered important enough to pursue. In fact, it was Flack who ended up needing hospital treatment for 12 hours after harming herself.
The case seemed set to be dismissed quickly and quietly, before the media found out about it. However, one detective learned some details and questioned the decision to drop the charges. Interestingly, this was the first time this detective had ever disagreed with a ruling from the Crown Prosecution Service.

Christine says the officer was already handling a shooting and a critical missing-person case that same night, but still believed Flack’s situation warranted further investigation.
Jess McDonald, a former police officer, explained to Christine that the fact Caroline Flack’s first offense was a simple common assault – the least serious type – strongly suggests her case was handled unusually and unfairly.
Regarding the investigation into Caroline’s death, a Metropolitan Police spokesperson stated that it’s natural for her loved ones to have questions about what happened, including how the police handled the case. We’ve addressed these concerns through independent reviews and a thorough inquest, both of which closely examined our actions.
The reviews found no evidence of wrongdoing by any officer, even regarding the choice to challenge the initial CPS decision. All actions taken were consistent with the laws and policies that were current at the time.
“The Metropolitan Police Service fully supports the officers involved in the decisions made.”
Flack almost died hours before her magistrates’ court appearance
When Flack appeared in court at Highbury Magistrates’ Court in London, she looked utterly distraught and unkempt. She wore dark clothing and attempted to conceal herself with a scarf, and her eyes appeared distant and unfocused.
In her book, Search For The Truth, a close friend, Mollie Grosberg, shares that just hours before her death, Flack was hiding at The Ned Hotel in London. Grosberg says Flack called several friends sounding heavily impaired, after reportedly drinking all the alcohol in the hotel minibar and taking pills from the room.
Mollie remembers being incredibly stressed because the court hearing was the next day, and she feared the person involved wouldn’t survive.

Mollie explained that she contacted a doctor, and the doctor told her to make herself vomit to get rid of any pills she’d taken. She remembers managing to bring up a few tablets.
Mollie adds that you’re likely wondering if she should even be attending the court hearing, given how sick she is.
Look, as a mom, I was really questioning my choices. I kept asking myself if I’d want this happening to my own daughter. Honestly, I was lost about what the best course of action was, but I figured taking things to court, even though it was tough right then, would ultimately be the right thing to do for her.
Flack had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder
During the documentary, Christine revealed that her daughter had a history of mental health issues and had previously been diagnosed with bipolar disorder by a physician.
“At the time, they used to call it manic depression. She didn’t want to be told that. She didn’t want a label,” says Christine.
She deeply disliked struggling with her mental health, and everyone acted like it was a secret. Bringing it up was considered a terrible thing to do.
Louisa Booth, Caroline Flack’s agent and a steadfast supporter throughout her final days, alleges that a psychiatric assessment which found Flack unfit to stand trial was ignored.
Louisa explained they received a professional assessment, but it wasn’t taken into consideration. She was shocked that the psychiatrist’s report was simply dismissed.

Even Flack’s sister thought she should be ‘punished’
A particularly upsetting scene in Search For The Truth features Flack’s sister, Elizabeth, recalling how The Sun newspaper published disturbing photos of the crime scene – specifically, Flack’s blood-covered bedroom.
The photo was actually taken by Lewis himself, and a friend of his later sold it to the newspaper. News outlets and the public immediately assumed the blood in the photo was Lewis’s and that Flack had attacked him – initial reports incorrectly stated the weapon was a lamp.
Honestly, the pictures were really disturbing – super graphic stuff. They actually showed up on the front page of The Sun newspaper, but they took them down from their site after Caroline Flack passed away. It was just… a lot.
Distraught, Elizabeth says: “I let her down by not being there.”
I only knew what I read in the press because Carrie had isolated herself out of embarrassment, and I didn’t have her side of the story. My first thought was that if the reports were true, she deserved to be punished. Without knowing the facts firsthand, it colored my judgment of my sister and made her feel like she couldn’t confide in me. She never felt she could simply deny the accusations, or that I would even believe her if she did.

Flack’s ex blackmailed her after arguments
In 2018, Caroline Flack became engaged to Andrew Brady, who was known for appearing on The Apprentice and winning Celebrity Big Brother, after only three months of dating. However, the couple split by July of that same year.
According to Flack’s agent in the documentary, Brady often threatened to contact the media whenever they disagreed. Digital Spy has contacted Brady for a statement and will share his response when it’s available.
Louisa describes their relationship as intense and volatile, marked by frequent arguments. He often threatened to share private details with the media, forcing her to constantly try and resolve conflicts to prevent him from doing so.
Mollie, a friend of Flack, says she often heard the couple having terrible fights. However, she emphasizes that Caroline never threatened anyone else, only herself. While the arguments were awful, Mollie insists she never felt physically afraid of Caroline.
