Okay, let’s talk about episode 3 of It: Welcome to Derry. The similarities to Stranger Things were there from the start, but this episode really hammered them home. And the timing couldn’t be more interesting – these two shows are about to go head-to-head as streaming rivals! Welcome to Derry will still be releasing new episodes when the first part of Stranger Things‘ final season hits Netflix on November 26th. It’s going to be a November to remember for fans of supernatural mysteries, that’s for sure.
Both Stranger Things and It: Welcome to Derry fall into the supernatural horror genre and feature a group of young characters at their core. Welcome to Derry’s characters are being seen as the prequel’s take on the iconic Losers’ Club from Stephen King’s original story. Comparisons to the original “Losers” were especially strong in episode 3, and one scene in particular highlights how Welcome to Derry will inevitably draw parallels to Stranger Things.
The third episode of ‘It: Welcome to Derry’ hinted at the first look of Pennywise as a clown. The reveal happened in a photo the kids took while investigating the Derry graveyard, trying to find evidence of what happened to Teddy, Phil, and Susie. Lilly specifically needed this proof to avoid being returned to Juniper Hill Asylum, and also to help clear Ronnie’s father’s name. The scene, with the kids taking pictures in the cemetery, strongly resembled something from the show ‘Stranger Things’.

Just like the main group in Hawkins faced scary dangers, the kids in Derry back in 1962 tried to make the monster appear so they could prove it existed. Rich proposed a plan involving a ritual at the local graveyard, which quickly turned into a wild chase as the ghosts of Pennywise’s past victims hunted Rich, Will, Lilly, and Ronnie through the cemetery. Fans of Stranger Things might recognize a few things about this scene.
In the first four seasons of Stranger Things, Mike, Dustin, Lucas, and Will often travel by bicycle, a common choice for kids their age. However, the bikes in episode 3 of It: Welcome to Derry – particularly in the graveyard scene – strongly evoked the feel of Stranger Things. It wasn’t just the bikes themselves, but the overall atmosphere that created the connection.
As the group fled from the ghosts, the cemetery began to shake and split open, with glowing red cracks appearing like something from the Upside Down in Stranger Things. It’s notable that both Pennywise and the main villain from Stranger Things, Vecna, frequently use illusions to prey on their victims’ fears.
It: Welcome To Derry & Stranger Things Already Have Several Similarities

Beyond the graveyard scene in episode 3 of It: Welcome to Derry, the show had already shown similarities to Stranger Things. Both series start with the disappearance of a young boy – Matty in Welcome to Derry and Will Byers in Stranger Things – which prompts his friends to look into what happened. They also share common themes, like being set in a small town with supernatural events and secretive government operations.
We’re not saying It: Welcome to Derry copied ideas from Stranger Things. The creators of Stranger Things, the Duffer Brothers, have always acknowledged Stephen King – and specifically It – as a major influence. While the story of kids in Hawkins fighting a dark force shares similarities with the Losers’ Club, it’s more about shared inspiration than direct copying.
Given how incredibly popular Stranger Things has been, being compared to it is a good sign. Now that Stranger Things is finishing up with its fifth season, fans are looking for a new show to love, and Welcome to Derry could be it. While the show hasn’t been officially greenlit yet, plans are already in place for future seasons, suggesting it could have a long run on HBO.
New episodes of It: Welcome to Derry release Sundays on HBO and HBO Max.
