Sesame Street Reimagined On Netflix After 56 Years On PBS

Okay, so after an incredible 56-year run, Sesame Street is making a big move! The show, which first charmed audiences way back in 1969, is heading to Netflix with a fresh, new take. For decades, it was a PBS staple – I remember watching it as a kid! – and more recently we’ve seen it pop up on HBO and HBO Max, too. But now, get ready for a reimagined Sesame Street experience on Netflix. It’s exciting to think about a new generation discovering Big Bird and the gang!

Previously, you could watch new episodes of Sesame Street on HBO Max, but that deal has ended. Now, Netflix—the leading streaming service—has the show, and brand-new episodes are available now as Sesame Street: Volume 1. Released on November 10th, this volume features four 30-minute episodes and has been updated with a fresh look and new interactive elements.

For the first time, viewers will get a peek inside the iconic brownstone on Sesame Street. Kids can now experience the show in exciting new ways with the addition of engaging, 11-minute stories. Plus, thanks to Netflix, the new episodes will be available in over 30 languages.

Even with all the updates, the Sesame Street I love will still have all the characters I grew up with, the bits I always enjoyed, and fun surprises like celebrity guests – apparently, Bubba Wallace is stopping by in the first volume! Plus, you can still expect plenty of music and animation, which is fantastic.

The first part of the series is now available, with two more parts coming this season. These upcoming installments will focus on themes of compassion and kindness.

Elmo, Big Bird, Cookie Monster, and all their friends – like Bert, Ernie, Oscar the Grouch, Grover, Count von Count, Snuffleupagus, Abby Cadabby, and Julia – have been bringing joy to viewers on Sesame Street for generations.

Sesame Street has consistently attracted new young viewers as each generation grows up, ensuring the show remains a beloved part of childhood for decades.

In 2024, some fans were worried when HBO Max announced it wouldn’t be renewing its contract to air new episodes of Sesame Street. This happened as HBO Max was shifting away from children’s programming, and Sesame Street no longer aligned with the streamer’s future plans.

The agreement with HBO and HBO Max gave Sesame Street a new income stream, something that wouldn’t have happened without Netflix offering a new direction for the show. While PBS continued to air new episodes during the time Sesame Street was on HBO/HBO Max, those episodes appeared several months after they debuted on the streaming service.

Thanks to a new agreement with Netflix, fans can now enjoy episodes of Sesame Street at the same time, whether they watch on Netflix or their local PBS channel.

With a reimagined show, Sesame Street hopes to keep children entertained for years to come.
