A surprising and somewhat debated event has unfolded for one of Walt Disney World’s most unexpected internet stars. Last year, Tally the Elf quickly became popular at Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party in Magic Kingdom, delighting visitors with his funny “naughty or nice” routine during the Mickey’s Once Upon a Christmastime Parade.
But this year, the character’s return has left fans both surprised and divided.
Disney World’s holiday parade still features Tally the Elf, but the character has changed significantly. Previously played by a male actor, Tally is now portrayed by a female performer and interacts with the audience much less than before.
Who is Tally The Elf at Disney World?
I was absolutely charmed by Tally last year! She became a huge hit online and at the parades – it was so fun watching her dramatically write names on Santa’s list and declare everyone ‘naughty’ or ‘nice’! She really brought a lot of joy to everyone.
Videos of the enthusiastic elf quickly spread across TikTok and Instagram, gaining millions of views and making the performer an instant fan favorite. Even The New York Post wrote about Tally’s popular performances, noting that the playful elf brought fun and excitement back to the holiday season at Magic Kingdom.
Look, as much as I love the Disney experience, things got really messy recently with one of the characters. It’s crazy – as this performer got more popular, some guests went way too far, trying to figure out who was inside the costume and actually contacting them. I read on Inside the Magic that the actor playing the character in 2024 actually had to take a break because people were doxxing them and sending online harassment. It’s a shame when things like that happen and ruin the magic for everyone.
In 2025, Tally’s role at the holiday experience has been updated. The actress playing the elf now focuses on the performance itself and no longer pauses to chat with visitors or dramatically look at Santa’s list.
Instead of interacting directly, she simply waves, poses for pictures, and performs pre-planned routines while staying in her designated spot. Disney hasn’t officially explained the change, but fans believe it’s due to disruptive guest behavior and the attention that another character, Tally the Elf, received last year after a video went viral.
Disney fans have different opinions about this change. Some are happy the character is still part of the parade, maintaining a festive spirit. Others are disappointed, feeling that something special has been lost – the personal connection that used to make seeing the character during the parade a heartwarming experience.

It’s unclear if the recent, calmer version of Tally the Elf is a lasting change or just a temporary adjustment. However, it’s clear that Tally used to represent the playful, spontaneous joy of the holidays at Walt Disney World. This new version shows how even a little bit of internet popularity can lead to surprising transformations.
