Katherine Ryan laughs off backlash over her foulmouthed reference to Sir David Beckham’s investiture on Have I Got News For You as pre-recorded intro causes more headaches for beleaguered BBC bosses

I have to say, I thought Katherine Ryan handled herself brilliantly on ‘Have I Got News For You‘ despite all the fuss! It seems some people were upset by what she said, but she definitely seemed to be taking it all in stride and even found the humor in the backlash, which I really appreciated seeing on Monday morning.

The Canadian comedian received criticism from viewers of the popular BBC show after repeatedly using a derogatory term when talking about Sir David Beckham’s recent knighthood.

During Friday’s show, 42-year-old Ryan discussed leaked emails from 2013 where David Beckham expressed anger about not receiving a knighthood. In those emails, Beckham used a highly offensive term to describe the committee responsible for awarding honors.

Comedian Maisie Adam continued a string of crude jokes on the pre-recorded show by suggesting it would have been darkly humorous if King Charles had knighted someone with a vulgar phrase, specifically, “Arise, you ct.”

Ryan then made another joke that prompted complaints online about BBC standards. He said, ‘I’m not sure if we’re allowed to say the “C-word” on air, but since we mentioned Victoria Beckham earlier, we’ll make an exception.’

This situation added to the BBC’s difficulties, which are already significant. The company is facing a leadership gap and increasing scrutiny from politicians following the resignations of Director-General Tim Davie and head of news Deborah Turness. These resignations stemmed from controversy over how a speech by former U.S. President Donald Trump was edited.

On Monday, Ryan seemed cheerful while sharing a piece about the recent drama surrounding her presentation with her Instagram followers.

Sharing a screenshot of a recent headline, she playfully wrote: ‘That was just a taste of what’s coming! You can watch the full episode of this week’s Have I Got News For You on BBC iPlayer.’

Okay, so things got a little awkward on set just now! Ryan made a comment about Victoria Beckham, and it seemed to really surprise some people in the audience. I quickly chimed in to say I do like her – honestly, I just wasn’t anticipating that kind of response! It’s always interesting when a comment lands differently than you expect, isn’t it?

People watching the show were upset by the constant use of a derogatory slur, and many specifically objected to the word’s offensive nature.

Someone was upset about a racial slur being aired on a BBC program. They questioned why the offensive language wasn’t edited out, especially since it was a pre-recorded show, and expressed their disappointment.

One person demanded Katherine Ryan be removed from her position, referencing a past incident where a controversial word was used on the show #hignfy, even in relation to Victoria Beckham, and stating she should be suspended.

One person found it strange and upsetting to hear a highly offensive slur used on the show ‘Have I Got News for You’.

One X user expressed strong anger, stating that those responsible for allowing a certain offensive word to be said on air at least twice during #hignfy should be held accountable.

People questioned the double standard of allowing presenters on the show to repeatedly use a derogatory term, while BBC News Channel presenter Martine Croxall was recently disciplined for allegedly letting her personal views show through her expression when discussing ‘pregnant people’ – a phrase she then changed to ‘pregnant women’ in the script.

During the most recent episode of Have I Got News for You, Ryan told Ian Hislop she’d only been a mom for two and a half weeks.

Ryan is a mother of four children. She and her husband, Bobby Koostra, have a son, Fred, age three, and a daughter, Fenna, age two. She also has a fifteen-year-old daughter, Violet, from a previous relationship.

Canadian actress and new mother, while pregnant and appearing on Davina McCall’s ‘Begin Again’ podcast, shared that she’s faced criticism – being labeled ‘privileged’ – after giving potty training advice to other mothers.

She previously mentioned her son Fred was potty trained by eight months old. Now, she’s explaining that she believes potty training can begin very early in a baby’s life, but she feels the term ‘potty training’ is often misunderstood when she says that.

People often react defensively when I suggest something isn’t working, immediately assuming I’m blaming them – like saying they’re a bad parent because their toddler still wears diapers. It seems like we’re just not understanding each other.

The mother of four explained that she thinks many caring parents unintentionally teach their babies to rely on diapers. They don’t realize they’re creating that habit from the very beginning.

Taking your child’s diaper off at set times and helping them use the potty is how you teach them to use it.
