Family life can be difficult, and even though Pierce Brosnan is a famous actor, he’s faced a lot of personal hardship and struggles.
Sean Connery, the 72-year-old James Bond actor, was seen this week making amends with his son, Christopher, 52. This comes after Connery previously stated he’d cut Christopher off due to his ongoing struggles with drug addiction.
Chris is the son of Pierce Brosnan’s late wife, Cassandra Harris, and her previous husband, Dermot.
Their lives took a devastating turn when Cassandra lost her battle with ovarian cancer in 1991. Sadly, their daughter Charlotte faced the same illness and passed away in 2013, bringing even more heartbreak.
The Australian actress, affectionately known as Cassie, passed away at the young age of 43, only one day after celebrating her 11th wedding anniversary. She and her husband had married in 1980.
Pierce Brosnan became a father to Sean William Brosnan in 1983 with his first wife, Cassandra. Later, after the death of Charlotte and Chris’s biological father in 1986, he adopted them as his own children.

Pierce and Chris have had a challenging relationship, complicated by Chris’s struggles with cocaine and heroin addiction. He once overdosed and fell into a coma.
The actor has frequently discussed the impact of Cassie’s death. A year after she passed away, he told People magazine that she was instrumental in shaping him into the person – and actor and father – he is today.
She’s a part of who I am, and I think about her every single day. I feel incredibly lucky to have known her.
He also described the immense pain of losing someone he was very close to and shared a deep connection with.
He said this was the first time he’d ever dealt with the loss of someone, and it felt incredibly overwhelming.
He described Cassandra’s difficult 18-month fight with cancer, sharing a touching story of how their young son, Sean, would pretend to be a doctor and care for her after chemotherapy, helping her when she felt sick and tired.
It still breaks my heart to think about the day my wife passed away. She died peacefully in my arms after 14 wonderful years together. Our daughter, Charlotte, was at drama school in London at the time and was actually on the phone when it happened – she rushed in as soon as she heard, with my brother, Christopher, right behind her. It was a devastating moment for all of us.
‘We were all together. And that’s how she went to God,’ he said.

Following Cassie’s death, Pierce found love again with Keely Shaye Smith, who is an American journalist, author, actress, and model.
Fans have been especially moved by Keely’s support of her husband as he continued to mourn his first wife, particularly given that they share sons, Paris and Dylan.
In a 2013 interview with the Irish Times, Pierce described Keely as a consistently kind and supportive presence, saying she helped him cope with the loss of Cassie. He added that Keely is like a guiding light in his life, always watching over him.
In 2013, he faced another heartbreaking loss when his oldest daughter, Charlotte, passed away from ovarian cancer – the same illness that took her mother’s life 21 years before. She was only 42 years old.
He announced the passing of his daughter, Charlotte Emily, in a statement, sharing that she died on June 28th after a battle with ovarian cancer.
She was with her husband, Alex, and their children, Isabella and Lucas, as well as her brothers, Christopher and Sean.
Charlotte faced her cancer with incredible strength, kindness, and dignity. We are deeply saddened by the loss of our beloved daughter.
We’re sending our prayers and hoping a cure for this terrible illness is found quickly. We are grateful for all the kind thoughts and sympathy everyone has shared.
The Irish actor rushed back to the UK from Eastern Europe, where he was filming the movie November Man, to be with his daughter who was ill.
In 2014, Pierce spoke on the Stand Up For Cancer LA telethon about the deep sadness Cassandra and Charlotte’s deaths caused.
Speaking at the Dolby Theatre, the Irish-born star described the heartbreaking experience of watching a loved one suffer from a debilitating illness. They explained that such grief leaves a permanent mark on a person’s mind and spirit.
Holding Cassie’s hand – her hand was always so strong and beautiful, even as she fought – is a memory that will stay with me forever. Losing her to ovarian cancer far too young was the hardest thing I’ve ever gone through.
Just last year, I held my daughter Charlotte’s hand as she passed away from this terrible disease, which she had inherited. She was a funny and wonderful person, and I miss her dearly.

On top of the heartbreak of losing Charlotte, Pierce and Chris have struggled in their relationship. Back in 2005, Pierce explained that Chris’s struggles with addiction led him to end contact with his brother.
In an interview with Playboy, Pierce revealed that Christopher was going through a difficult time and seemed very lost, despite Pierce knowing his whereabouts.
I’m holding onto hope and believing he’ll get better. This has been a difficult time for our whole family, and he’s facing the biggest challenge of all. He’s capable of overcoming this, but it seems he’s choosing not to.
Explaining his harsh approach, Pierce said it came from a place of wanting what was best, even if it hurt. He acknowledged it was difficult to see his son struggle, but he ultimately had to tell Christopher to make a change: either start living his life fully, or face the consequences. He added that he was still praying for his son’s well-being.
In 1996, Christopher received a £1,000 fine for driving under the influence of alcohol. The following year, in 1997, he was sentenced to three months in jail for the same offense.
Chris, a contestant on the first season of Love Island in 2005, was also caught up in a large fight at Browns nightclub in London, which resulted in him being barred from the club.
He was also arrested for theft at another club, Chinawhite, but charges were later dropped.

Last week, Pierce and Chris appeared to have mended their relationship, as they were spotted together at a family dinner in Notting Hill.
According to a source who spoke with The Mirror, both individuals appeared happy and at ease while chatting with one of Pierce Brosnan’s sons, Dylan.
Pierce and Christopher have faced challenges in the past, but they seem to have overcome them. It was heartwarming to see them together.
The Daily Mail has contacted Pierce’s representatives for comment.

In a 2017 interview with Esquire Magazine, he talked about how losing the important women in his life had a lasting impact on him.
He admitted he wasn’t an optimistic person. He described feeling weighed down by sadness, saying a sense of gloom often kept him company.
Pierce shared that his faith helped him cope with the grief and pain after Charlotte passed away.
He told the German newspaper Bild that’s what you turn to when you’re feeling incredibly down and overwhelmed – when you’re heartbroken and carrying a huge burden.
‘No one can escape life’s pain. That’s life.’
Following the loss of his daughter, his wife Keely has been a source of support. He shared with the Irish Mirror that love is a wonderful emotion and can be found in many different forms.
I hope the person lying next to you, your wife, is the one waking up beside you each morning.
Oh my gosh, he said it! It’s everything, you know? We just… work. We’re good together, genuinely in love, but it’s more than that! He said we actually like each other, and that’s the best part! He gets it – love isn’t this crazy, constant fire. It ebbs and flows, and as long as we like each other, that’s what matters. It’s so real and perfect!
It can be overwhelming how strong our feelings are, but it’s also amazing. I make sure to tell her I love her every day, because expressing that is really important.

Pierce experienced significant hardship growing up, not only facing numerous losses but also being raised without a father, as his dad, Tom, left the family soon after his birth.
He recalled that he only met Tom once as he filmed Remington Steele in Ireland in 1984.
He told Esquire that his instincts as a father came entirely from within, explaining he wasn’t influenced by any paternal role models because he didn’t have one.
I only spent one afternoon with Tom, a Sunday where we chatted about various things and shared a couple of Guinness beers before saying goodbye. I wish I’d had the chance to get to know him better. I remember he was a talented whistler and had a confident stride – that’s all I really know about him.
