Even though Dune: Part Three is still almost a year away, excitement is building. Director Denis Villeneuve aims to finish his epic Dune trilogy, and most of the original cast is expected to return for the final chapter of Paul Atreides’ story.
We haven’t seen much news about the making of the new Dune movie lately. Filming happened with very few glimpses for fans. Most of the buzz has been about Timothée Chalamet shaving his head before filming started and the casting of Robert Pattinson, which signals a significant change from the previous film.
Dune 3’s Cast Is Way More Secretive Than Dune 2’s
Throughout 2022, excitement for Dune 2 steadily grew as the cast list expanded. In March, Florence Pugh joined the project as Princess Irulan, quickly followed by the news that Austin Butler would play Feyd-Rautha. These announcements really built up anticipation for the film and brought together a group of Hollywood’s most promising young actors.
Following months of rumors about Florence Pugh and Austin Butler joining the cast, May 2022 brought the exciting news that Christopher Walken would play Emperor Shaddam IV. The next month, Léa Seydoux, known for her role in the James Bond films, was added as Lady Margot Fenring. These castings completed the major roles in Dune 2 and created an even more impressive cast than the first Dune movie.
I thought Dune 3 would continue the trend of attracting big names, just like when Robert Pattinson signed on. However, that hasn’t been the case. The only new actors announced so far are Nakoa-Wolf Momoa and Ida Brooke, who will play Paul and Chani’s children, Leto II Atreides and Ghanima Atreides, respectively.
The strange thing is, if the movie is indeed adapting Dune Messiah, several other important characters still need to be cast. While Robert Pattinson is rumored to be playing Scytale, actors haven’t been confirmed for characters like Edric, Korba, Bijaz, Lichna, and Farok. Given how significant these characters are in the book, many expected director Denis Villeneuve to add some big names to the cast for Dune 3.
Dune: Part Three’s Confirmed Cast Members
- Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides
- Zendaya as Chani
- Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan
- Anya Taylor-Joy as Alia Atreides
- Jason Momoa as Duncan Idaho / Hyat
- Josh Brolin as Gurney Halleck
- Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica
- Robert Pattinson as Scytale (unconfirmed)
- Nakoa-Wolf Momoa as Leto II Atreides
- Ida Brooke as Ghanima Atreides
With no new cast members announced, many are wondering what’s happening with the expected characters. Has director Villeneuve opted for less famous actors, or perhaps even removed those roles altogether? Or will major stars be revealed as part of the cast later on?
The casting choices for Paul’s children in Dune 3 suggest that director Denis Villeneuve is deviating from the plot of Messiah. Many fans, including myself, believe he’s also incorporating parts of Children of Dune into the film. If that’s the case, we might not see all the characters we anticipated, as the director appears to be putting his own spin on Frank Herbert’s novels.
He can’t possibly exclude all those characters, so there need to be some other major new additions to the cast alongside Robert Pattinson. It’s possible Dune 3 is intentionally keeping these actors under wraps until the film’s release, like they did with Anya Taylor-Joy as Alia. However, keeping things so secret might mean the movie misses an opportunity to generate excitement beforehand.
