The popular Netflix series Stranger Things is coming to an end with Season 5. While fans are eagerly speculating about what will happen to characters like Eleven, Mike, Hopper, and Joyce, one thing is certain: this season will be the last for these characters in Hawkins, Indiana. The creators, Matt and Ross Duffer, have confirmed this and have their reasons for bringing the story to a close.
The creators of Stranger Things, known as the Duffer Brothers, are skilled storytellers. They recently spoke with SFX Magazine about the details of the show’s final season, which is coming in 2025. When asked about continuing the story with the same characters, Ross Duffer made it clear that they don’t plan to do so.
We truly want this to be the final chapter for Eleven, Mike, Lucas, Dustin, Steve, and the town of Hawkins. We don’t want to revisit these characters years later with a scenario like needing Mike’s help again. We’re committed to ending their story here and are being careful not to leave any possibilities open for future continuations.
I really admire when storytellers know when to finish a story. The creators of the show, the Duffers, feel they’ve told the story they wanted to, and they want to end it properly. I especially appreciate this because so many franchises and TV shows these days drag on for too long. Though one of the Duffers playfully suggested continuing the story with the cast, they aren’t actually planning a sequel.
I used to tell my fellow cast members that if our careers didn’t work out, we could always return to the show later, just like the portal to the Upside Down reopening. But we’ve already told the complete story of those characters and that world. There’s nothing left to explore, and it’s best to leave the story finished—a sequel wouldn’t have the same powerful effect.
Good news for fans of the characters from Hawkins! An animated spin-off called Tales from ‘85 will continue their story, taking place between seasons two and three. There’s also talk of a separate live-action spin-off, and Finn Wolfhard has hinted it will be a series of unrelated stories, not centered around Eleven and the original group. However, don’t expect to see the main characters return after their fight with Vecna – this new content will expand the universe, but won’t follow their specific journeys.

Here’s a breakdown of how the opening five minutes of Stranger Things 5—specifically, a flashback to the Upside Down—alters our understanding of events from Season 1, and what remains the same.
The finale of the popular series Stranger Things represents a significant turning point for the Duffer Brothers, both for the show and their careers. With the series concluded, they’re moving to Paramount, where they’ll create new TV shows and movies for the big screen. While they’ll still be executive producers on any future Stranger Things spin-offs, they’ll likely be less directly involved. Despite that, it’s good to see them feel ready to move on from the main story and characters they’ve developed over the years.
Okay, folks, mark your calendars! As a huge Stranger Things fan, I’m thrilled to tell you the fifth and final season is coming to Netflix in two parts. Volume 1 drops November 26th, and then we have to wait just a bit longer – Volume 2 arrives on December 25th. But trust me, the wait will be worth it because the very last episode, the series finale, is scheduled for December 31st. Get ready to say goodbye to Hawkins!
